Hi! My name is Heather, I'm 28, married for 4.5 years, and we have a beautiful son who's 3.5. Our son was diagnosed with autism in December 2005 and he's nonverbal. He's had a total of 4 hearing tests done, and although none of them came out perfect they don't believe he has hearing loss. Because he can't speak, we've been trying to teach ourselves ASL so that our son is able to communicate with the world around him. He's now up to nearly 100 signs, but my husband and I are realizing that his speech may never fully develop so we need to really learn ASL as a second language. I'm hoping to learn from others on this forum about the deaf community and hopefully find support here, since I have yet to meet anyone IRL who is at all familiar with ASL.

Thanks for letting me participate in your forum :ty:

to AD.. My son was thought to be austitic at first but when we moved back to my mom's from the apt in town. He outgrow of austim? We think lead poisoning caused him to be like that. they ran more tests on my son and found out that he have SPD. Sensory processing disorder.
So many kids who have autism tend to have SPD. i dont know if your does. My son is doing well despite his spd and is very smart but have hard time making friends. He will never be normal. Dont think you are alone in this. OK There are several members in here who have austitic kids. So feel free to mingle among us and find more infos. Meanwhile I hope you will enjoy the stay with us and happy posting away! :)

That is great that you're teaching your son ASL, it's good to see a loving parent who will go through the effort of learning another language if their child needs such, I hope all goes all in your endeavour to learn the language :ily:

Welcome you stay here and let's breath your post away..

I've seen some of members who alike you have autism child.

It's great place here and feedback sharing...

Hi!
Classic autism often includes apraxia or the inabilty to speak verbally.
You are doing the right thing by teaching your child ASL. It might turn out that he's smarter then people think.
Are there United Cerebal Palsys near you? What about Arcs?
I know that there are some kids with CP who use Sign as a primary language, as well as some kids with other types of developmental delays.
Have you tried things like the gluten/casin free diet? I've heard that can really help some kids.
