Hello everyone. I am new here, so I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Shawna. I have been losing my hearing now for over 4 years. I have been totally deaf in my right ear for 3 years and my left ear has been going over time. My doctors could not figure out exactly why I was losing my hearing, until recently, when my left ear started going out faster every month. He(my doctor) then decided to do a more high def. test, and that explained what was causing the deafness. My eighth cranial nerve is severely damaged. It is now just a matter of time before I am totally deaf.
Again I just wanted to introduce myself and see if anyone knew of any websites that teaches ASL online?

ASLPro.com Home is one, but it is more effective if you go take classes. I am sure if we know where you are someone can put you in touch with something to help you.

Welcome!! I started learning ASL at www.LifePrint.com They have free lessons that you can go through, which is the same information used in the site owner's college classes. He also gives you a bit of ASL grammar and such. To just look up signs, www.SigningSavvy.com is good, as is the previous mentioned www.ASLpro.com.

God bless!

Sorry, I am in Virginia. Thank you all for the website links. I cannot afford to take classes at the local college, and I am not eligible for any grants because I used them all up when I went to college to get my Assoc. Degree before I started losing my hearing. I am not sure if they will let me apply for state funds to take ASL Classes or not, but I am going to look into it for the Spring Semester, but I want to get a head start before hand and get my husband and kids in on it also.

try this: Department of Rehabilitative Services or this http://www.vddhh.org/ <----- they will help you with technologies and things. they did with me. They may help you with sign language.

Thanks I will. I was also wondering, I want to go to work, but with not being able to hear and not knowing sign language. Are there any jobs that the Deaf or hard of hearing can do?

just stick with the associate degree you have and work around that. There isn't really many jobs that don't require you to communicate or use the phone. so we have to use accommodations instead.

for example, I used to be a Nurse Assistant but the only problem is that I can't check blood pressure using the stethoscope , So the company gave me a digital BP reading instead (they won't let others use it because it isn't alway accurate but it was better for me check with digital BP than not check it at all) . I don't answer phones either so they have someone else do all the answering.

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum. I hope you have fun reading and posting all the threads here. See you around.
