'We’ve got to make them afraid of us,' Michael Bloomberg says

In his first major initiative since leaving office, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced plans on Wednesday to launch a new gun control organization that he hopes can rival the National Rifle Association.

The grassroots umbrella group, called Everytown, is "a movement of Americans working together to end gun violence and build safer communities."

"For too long, change has been thwarted by the Washington gun lobby and by leaders who refuse to take commonsense steps that will save lives," says the organization's mission statement.

“They say, ‘We don’t care. We’re going to go after you,’” Bloomberg told the New York Times of the NRA. “‘If you don’t vote with us we’re going to go after your kids and your grandkids and your great-grandkids. And we’re never going to stop.’ ... We’ve got to make them afraid of us."

The NRA has yet to respond publicly.

The former New York City mayor and founder of Bloomberg L.P. is investing $50 million for the launch.

“He’s got the money to waste,” Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, told the paper. “So I guess he’s free to do so. But frankly, I think he’s going to find out why his side keeps losing.”

Bloomberg, though, insists he's not trying to outspend the NRA.

"This is not a battle of dollars," Bloomberg said on NBC's "Today" show. "This is a battle for the hearts and minds of America so that we can protect our children, protect innocent people. If you take a look at the number of people who use illegal guns to commit suicide, a number of people that are killed every year, we're the only civilized country in the world that has this problem. We have to do something."

In the wake of deadly shootings in Tucson, Ariz., Aurora, Colo., Newtown, Conn., Fort Hood, Texas, and elsewhere, Bloomberg is hoping his new group can do what President Barack Obama has not: successfully lobby for stricter gun control laws.

"People will vote for whatever they think is in their own self-interest to get elected and re-elected," Bloomberg said on NBC's "Today" show. "We've got to convince them that 80 percent of gun owners, 90 percent of Americans who are favor of simple background checks to make sure criminals, minors and people with psychiatric problems can't buy guns. Common sense. We've got to make them understand that that's what the public wants."

Bloomberg points to the election of Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe in the NRA's home state as proof his gun control lobbying can work.

"This is a battle we're going to win," Bloomberg told Yahoo News' Katie Couric last month. "This isn't a partisan issue. I know people say, 'Well, one party's in favor, one party's against.' They are individual votes and I will support individual senators and congressmen who vote to make my kids safer and your kids safer."

Bloomberg dismissed the idea that his gun control initiatives are paving the way for a presidential run.

"No is the answer," he said on "Today." "Plain and simple. I'm going to spend the rest of my life trying to make a better world for myself, for my kids, for my grandchildren."

what a grossly misguided line of thinking... when will they ever realize that it's a failed concept for many years? *smh*

must be nice preaching around about guns while Bloomberg had a round-the-clock armed security team

NRA got a ton of money and a lot of political clout, so I think it is a lose-lose situation for him.

Don't forget 2nd Amendment in US Constitution that trumps any gun bans and restrictions.

It is just Bloomberg's talk and he's piece of BS.

It is US Supreme Court's discretion to interpret the constitutionality of firearm.

There are gun ban for convicted felons and mentally ill but they have other way to get one, thorough.

Well, he's trying to make them afraid of "us."

:hmm:...

$50 million buckaroos....insert a few of those in my pocket...and I might be convinced...

I think it the money would be better spend if it was use to build some young centers so kids would have a place to go instead of hanging on the streets looking for trouble. Or put it into the schools so they can have more after school programs to help kids that are having trouble doing their school work. Then kids will not drop out b/c they're failing .

I need to rant about Bloomberg and Brady Campaign.

Why I have to pick anti-gay, pro-gun politician OR pro-gay, pro-gun politician? :pissed:

Back in 1980s, democrats were perfectly blend between liberal and conservative and it was most moderate party until Brady Campaign divided those party in 1990s, that caused many southerners switch from democrat to republican, so pushing the view to more right, so now, southern democrat already died, thanks to Brady Campaign.

When I was teen, I used to support gun control because I was brainwashed by anti-gun groups that told me about guns are bad for you. Now, not anymore and I'm becoming very pro-gun rights, so I don't support federal government to regulate on firearm anymore. I support to have mandatory gun lesson for students and they should understand that guns are constitutionally protected. I thank to NRA, despite about support anti-gay politicians for their hardworking to kill the gun control laws, especially in Chicago and DC. The guns are truly American tradition and you really should respect them.

That why I left democrat to becoming more libertarian because of gun views AND gay rights. Funny, I'm getting more friendlier to conservative than liberal, even there were a lot of hard left and extreme liberal attacked me when I left comment about support guns, smaller government and less tax. I didn't read liberal media so much anymore, except for CNN and The Huffington Post (especially other than political, even there are many conservative/libertarian readers).

Brady Campaign is one of my most enemy, even much worse than Tea Party, but... some chapters in Tea Party support gay rights, that's not issue.

Support gun rights and support gay rights? I encouraging you to vote libertarian instead of democrat.

Democrats have nothing to win but lose the vote until they change their stance to make more moderate, or centrist. I'm really don't care if republicans win to takeover of the congress this November to send really painful message to Brady Campaign and Bloomberg.

I'm sorry about political discussion but I have to do it to got out of frustration, also feel free to PM me if you have any questions or chat.

The mayor is wasting his time... and money!

I heard the mayor say on TV that he can't think of a better way to spend his $$$. I was like HUH? How about trying to keep kids off the streets and in school.
