Hello all!

I am new to this forum and wanted to introduce myself. I'm currently in the IT industry but am wanting to change careers to become an ASL interpreter. I live in Nashville, TN. I am not deaf. But, after surviving an acoustic neuroma surgery I felt the need to start a new career that would help others who have lost their hearing or may have been deaf from birth. I was very lucky to retain 97% of my hearing after surgery. They gave me a 50/50 chance of losing all hearing.

I am very interested in finding a school in my area but am having trouble locating one. Anything around the middle Tennessee area would be great or even southern Kentucky. Any advice?

Hello!!!

I am sorry , I live in Massauchettes and would not know of any place, but there might be other people here that know . I was never told anything about ASL as a child and only knew 2 people that were hoh, one was my speech therapist I had when I was 8 yo and a girl I went to school with.
Not much of a Deaf culture .

Welcome to allDeaf nash.
Great your learning ASL.

Greetings, Nash and welcome to the AllDeaf Community! :)

I was also shocked when I seen you wrote that "dead"! LOL. Of course, I knew it was a typo. However, I would assume you don't check what you write before you post? That isn't a problem but people can be easily offended, especially deaf people. I'm not but I'm just saying!

Also, that is such a wonderful thing you have retained your hearing!

Tell me something? What is it of ASL that you like or why you want to learn ASL for?

As a Deaf person, He can become a Deaf interpreter which mean the Deaf interpreter can interpret what the hearing interpreter said from the hearing lecturer or spoke person. The camera will be on the Deaf interpreter because the Deaf person can use expression and body expression when signing on the camera.

Up in Ontario, Canada, we have a few Native Deaf interpreters who want to be interpreters for the Native Deaf like me. So no matter if a person is hearing or deaf, they can be interpreters for the Deaf.

Here in Santa Fe, I have some hearing Native interpreters for doctors and specialists that I need to take care of myself with health problems.

EDIT: Did Nash said he is not deaf or the other way around as he is deaf???? So he is not deaf but want to make a career in ASL interpreter.
Right??

If you have auto spell check it will sometime 'correct' a word you typed with a wrong word . I had tried to type 'Star of David ' and when I posted it said 'Stair of David' And if I don't type a word fast enough it get typed as the wrong word.
