From what I have heard from some folks that went to blind schools, while you learn great braille and O&M skills, many blind schools only teach you the bare minimum and don't encourage students to excel. Another thing I have heard is that when going to a blind school, many blind/VI children don't learn how to socialize with sighted people, and how to constantly be around people to whom blindness is a novelty.
I'm not sure how accurate that is, but I think it's worth considering.
