Hi I am wondering if someone can shed some light on the new world of audiologists, kindergarten, hearing aids, CT scans, surgeries. . . .we are a little lost. We just found out that our 5 year old boy has moderate to severe hearing loss in his right ear and perfect hearing in his left ear. He has been compensating well for the last few years- well enough to fool his last 2 pediatricians and the ENT who only gave us the referral to the audiologist because we wanted it and not because she thought he had a problem. We wanted to rule hearing out as a reason that he talks so loud, has speech delay and doesn't seem to be listening to us unless we are yelling (don't like doing that) and is having some major attention problems while in groups. Our suspicions were correct when we found out that he cannot hear any speech at all when his good ear is blocked and that both ears are really needed to triangulate on the sounds and understand what is going on around him.

So our audiologist is recommending the Naída S Super powered hearing aid with another FM transmitter for his good ear for school, at a very expensive price tag of about $3200- Our insurance does not cover a dime of the hearing aid. So we can see that you can buy hearing aids for less online- my question to all of you much more experienced people- do we need to stay with the audiologist and buy the hearing aid through her? Is this standard practice? or do we buy it ourselves? If you do not buy it through the audiologist will they not treat your child or test to make sure the device is doing what we want it to? What if you switch audiologists after you already own a device? We want the best care for our son but we were really caught off guard by the price. The Oticon was around $2300 and she said the phonax was about the same price but the price I remembered about phonax was $3200. Sorry for the weird questions but we are just trying to figure out what the rest of the people who need hear aids tend to do.

Thanks!

M
