Hi everyone,

Glad to have registered. I'm a hearing person from L.A. with little to no knowledge of ASL. A girl I am seeing, and developing strong feelings for, is an instructor for deaf children and passionate about perfecting her ASL to be a better teacher.

I want to sign some things to her, to learn some key phrases, that will catch her off guard. She doesn't know I'm trying to learn ASL but I'm doing it as a romantic gesture to show I'm interested in her career and willing to study for myself.

However, aside from the alphabet (which I've picked up from some YouTube videos), I have no clue what I'm doing. All I want to do is say a couple of sentences to her in ASL, and I'd like to do it this weekend on a special date we have planned. Does anyone have any ideas how I can go about learning some specific words (books, websites, etc.)? Is anyone here from Los Angeles willing to meet with me for a half hour over coffee to help? Or can someone perhaps help me through this message board to learn what I need?

I appreciate any advice on this matter and looking forward to learning more about a culture that up til now I had no experience with.

Thanks,
TC

Welcome to AllDeaf!!

You might try ASLPro.com Home or • ASL • American Sign Language

I am trying to teach myself ASL, but I am doing it while homeschooling 2 teenagers, helping my mother recover from 3 surgeries that resulted in her re-learning how to walk again, and I am now losing my ability to walk due to problems with my right leg, but hey - since I am now totally deaf after have only been hoh for 37 years, why not learn something new that will be beneficial for me and my family? Right?

Anywho..google is ur best friend. try ASLPro as well and google ASL help or dictionaries..the main thing is to learn the grammar part to a sentence or two cuz ASL grammar and english grammar is different. If you sign how we speak in english you will be siging see (signed exact english) instead of ASL
