Hello everyone,

My name is Vicky, profoundly deaf with 90 to 100+db loss in both ears, and 25 years old. I wanted to start a thread but decided that I should introduce myself first. I was mainstreamed early and do not know many deaf people. I really enjoy talking about "controversial" topics. I wouldn't consider myself as part of the Deaf culture, but I try to respect it and would like to find out more about it. I wanna see what makes Deaf people tick. :)

Welcome Daredevel 17...smile...I am profoundly deaf also..but mine happened just 7 yrs ago..laughing..I can laugh now...HMMM..what makes deaf pepople tick huh?? I am thinking the same sort of things as hearing..except...it seems to me in my small 7 yrs of deafness..that the hearing seem to have alot of misconceptions about the deaf..like..
we can't drive....or...we never leave the house..lol...just silly things and it really is not thier fault. I am an advocate for more intereaction betweeen deaf and hearing children.. I think they could make it easier of each other and alot of this misguided information and sometimes just plain fear fo the deaf would possibly ease a bit...I hope so..smile...welcome again..Peace to you..

Welcome to AllDeaf!!

I am a recent deafie after 37 years as a HOH person. I was also mainstreamed as the small town didn't know what to do with a HOH person. I am in another small town and they still don't seems to know what to do with deaf people. As PeaceLvr said - they think we can't do anything or be productive members of society. Boy are they wrong!!

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum. If you are late deafen, then you will learn a lot about our experiences with you. I have been Deaf since birth. I was mainstreamed with no interpreters and no notetakers. This was back in 1954 to 1966. I am an old Elder from First Nation Reserve. I hope you enjoy reading and posting all the threads here. Have fun with us. See you around.

Psst, you will have to wait to PM until you reach 50 posts on your Avatar. Then you can do that. :D

Wow everyone thanks for the big welcome! I am actually born deaf and also mainstreamed with no interpreters nor notetakers. Although most of my classes in college were math based, so there was really no need for notetakers!

Thanks for the tip! :)

:welcome: to AD! I was mainstreamed with no terps nor notetakers. I am fluent in ASL now and fully involved in the Deaf community. Life has been so much better since then. I am happy I am not in the hearing world 24/7 like before. Whew!
