Pay Range: $41,393 - $44,713 depending on experience/education. Salary is based on the negotiated faculty salary schedule for a 172-day contract.

This is a full-time, tenure track faculty position at Seattle Central Community College (SCCC) beginning Fall quarter, 2007.

Description: The Deaf Studies and ITP programs are interconnected at this college. Students must have successfully completed two full years of college-level ASL, or demonstrate equivalent skill prior to entering the ITP. The program is highly respected in this area and is a nationally-acclaimed two-year program that prepares students for entry-level employment in community settings as interpreters.

Essential Functions: Teach and co-teach with a full-time ITP instructor assigned courses in the Interpreter Training Program. Coordinate and meet with ITP Internship Coordinator and together monitor student internships. Participate with other faculty in a continual process of assessing the needs of the overall curriculum, developing new curriculum and implementing changes as needed. Maintain office hours for the purpose of assisting students. Conduct other tasks related to instruction in accordance with the Seattle Community College District/Seattle Community College Federation of Teachers Agreement. Some evening hours may be required.

Qualifications, Skills & Abilities: Bachelor’s degree in Interpreting or a related field AND five (5) years of interpreting experience; OR a Master’s degree in Interpreting, Deaf Education, or a related field AND three (3) years of interpreting experience. One (1) year of teaching experience OR 500 hours of experience in training interpreters (giving workshops or a mentoring program). Hold or qualify for certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Hold or qualify for a Washington State Workforce Education Teacher’s Certificate. Candidate will demonstrate ability to work with a wide range of student needs including students of diverse backgrounds and abilities, have a clear understanding and acceptance of community college philosophy and have ability in team-based instructional approaches. Will be required to meet and fulfill Washington state and SCCD Workforce Education Instructor Certification requirements.

Preferred Qualifications: A knowledge of and participation in the Deaf-Blind community. Experience in curriculum development. Post secondary teaching experience. Teaching experience in an ITP. Awareness of current issues relative to the interpreting profession.

NOTE: Position finalists will be required to perform a teaching lecture/lab and present related curriculum materials for the screening committee. This is in a union shop bargaining unit. As a condition of employment, you must within 30 days after appointment (1) become a member of the Seattle Community Colleges Federation of Teachers (SCCFT), or (2) pay a representative fee, or (3) pay a non-association fee. Non-payment of such fee is grounds for dismissal. Any dispute between you and the employee organization as to the amount of the representation fee can be resolved only under procedures provided by the employee organization, not the employer.
