Hi all, I am new here, just found you. I have a beautiful 6 month old baby boy. After his third 3 ear infection at 5 months, he got tubes (my dd2 got hers at 7 months). The day after surgery was horrible. He cried like it was his worst ear infection ever. The ENT looked at him and just said tubes look fine. Well, I requested a hearing test last week, and he failed it. He is not totally deaf. He startles to loud noise, but he has trouble with the lower/quiter noises. My DH and I notice we can shake a rattle in his right ear and he doesn't even turn, but he does in his left.
I called the ent again yesterday and expressed my concern. They said to retest him in 2 months in the soundproof room, and if still a problem, then do some test when he is sedated. Oh, also, he use to babble a little - "a goo", now, none at all. Either screaming or silence.
What do you all think? Is waiting 2 months too long? What if something is causing him to go deaf, and I am not doing anything? Please help, I do not know where to go. This board seems to be the most active. Any advice would be great.
Thanks.

In my opinion two months is to long to wait... the ENTS I worked for would've worked to get him in sooner... the ABR is the test they'll do when he's asleep-- and can be done w/out sedation-- as long as he's asleep-- it tests the brain waves to see if they respond to sound. At his age-- my son didn't do so well on the regular 'hearing test' since it's a behavior testing...

But yes two months is too long to wait... if there are other ENT's in the area or maybe even an Audiologist you can call, I'd try to get him somewhere else... but be sure they can do an ABR on him!! (Auditory Brainstem Response) test.

(my son was diagnosed when he was 6 weeks old after failing his newborn three times... he's had his hearing aids since he was 3.5 months old. He's 13.5 months old now-- and just reacting in the hearing tests!!)

Good luck!!!!

The longer the wait the time that he has to wait is precious learning time.

I would express that to your ENT. If does not give a. Much sooner apointment. I would suggest to seek another ENT that specializes in infants and children.

fyi...some deaf babies do respond to loud noises due to various factors...so I agree with the others who are urging you to seek an ENT who can see your child as soon as possible. Early intervention is crucial.

I can offer no advice that hasn't already been said, but just wanted to poke my nose into this thread and give you a big pat on the shoulder for doing the best for your child. It can't be easy, but thankyou. (I grew up severely hearing impaired but undiagnosed until I was 19 years old)

I'll just repeats what's been said, get your child's hearing tested sooner. It will be better for your child in the long time to be diagnosed early if he/she is deaf.
