Hi. My name is Danny. I am 44 years old and live in Mobile, AL. I just found out today that medical science cannot reverse the progressive deafness that I am currently experiencing. My world is growing more silent each day and I don't know ASL. I feel increasingly isolated and alone. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? I could use any advice.

Hey Danny, I am in a similar situation, having lost all my hearing in my right ear over 15 years ago, and losing the left side gradually from Meniere's disease. If you go to ALDA Inc. Home page - Information and support for those with hearing loss., which is Association of Late-Deafened Adults, they can start you on the way to preparing for your trip into deafness. You will find out from this trip who your REAL friends are. It is similar to becoming paralyzed in that people will react to you in ways you are not accustomed to. They have a chapter of ALDA in Atlanta, which is bit far, but maybe there will be some people there from your area. You are not alone. It is scary, but as I learned, you just gotta play the hand you are dealt.
