Hi there! My name is Amber. I'm new here, so this may not be the correct forum for this question, but here goes. My son is 4 months old, and, though he does not have any hearing difficulties (that we are aware of), I would like to teach him ASL as a second language. My mother taught me the alphabet when I was little, and I've always wanted to become fluent. Anyway, I would like help giving my son a name sign. I understand they are traditionally assigned by someone who is fluent in ASL. Is there anyone here who feels comfortable giving us one? His name is Ronan. I'd be happy to give you a little more info about him, if that would help. Thanks so much! - Amber :ty:

I don't know your location. It would be more special if you made a friend or 2 with someone who is deaf in real life and have them give you name sign in person. Maybe check to see if there are Deaf events in your area and go from there?

Thank you for your reply! I have looked to see if there are any Deaf groups in my area, and haven't had any luck yet. Because the sign would be just for us and our close family, would it be okay for us to come up with one? When we find a group for him, of course we would teach him to fingerspell his name until someone gives him a name sign.

I've been signing since I was a baby, so often I kind of don't think of signs until I need them. To my knowledge ( again not so good with top of my head some days, especially when I'm tired ) That doesn't really amount to an ASL sign. I can only think of reason, and retrospect that would be signed in that area, and retrospect isn't even signed with a R. Again, that's just top of my head, I'll get back to you if I can think of something that pops in my head, unless someone else here beats me to it. :P

Nobody signs where I live, so ASL is useless here and thus I just fingerspell my name, I have no name sign. Latin is a more used language here than ASL, since catholic churches around here use it (Aside from them using common vernacular overall).
