NAD Board of Directors Approves New ASL Position Statement

Silver Spring, MD -- The Board of Directors of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) approved a new position statement on American Sign Language (ASL) at its January 2008 meeting in Santa Fe, NM.

The NAD reaffirmed its stance that acquisition of language from birth is a human right for every person, and that deaf infants and children should be given the opportunity to acquire and develop proficiency in ASL as early as possible. ASL is recognized as the sign language of the American deaf community.

"This ASL position statement now brings us full circle and draws upon the original values of our founders," said Bobbie Beth Scoggins, NAD President. "Since 1880, the NAD has worked tirelessly to preserve, protect, and promote ASL as human right. The NAD also strongly believes in the right of deaf children to achieve linguistic fluency in both ASL and English so that they can become fully participating, contributing, and productive members of American society."

Nice read, but where is/are the solution(s) for the aquisition/learning of ASL and English for hearing families of deaf children to explore?

The family with the deaf 2 year old I just met last week learned ASL in 2 years since finding out about their daughter's deafness. Now, their 2 year old's language development is way advanced for her age. She is so way ahead of my 2 year old son even though my son is hearing and gets 2 languages. It is apparent that this little girl is extremely bright but the point is she had access to ASL thanks to her parents even though their ASL skills are not like a fluent ASL user. If parents really want it, they can do it.

Remember I posted how my coworder told me about those parents of her former student who werent consistent with CS and their children ended up with language delays? Those same parents would probably do that with ASL anyway. Parents really need to put their children first instead of expecting their children meeting their communication needs.

Try using the link provided and then carefully reading the entire position statement. The answers are there.

WTG...NAD.. loml... sounds like you never accept that you are deaf... and strongly believe in oral and cued speech..... you are something.. you need to accept and get involved in the deaf community... I promise your life would be changed for better if you get involved in the deaf community.... I strongly believe in ASL and ORAL both....

** nodding agreement** Any one who is looking for a quick fix is not going to be consistent.

How do you know he's deaf, I don't even remember recalling he said he was deaf, or maybe I've missed a post or so.

Is it even necessary to personal attack Ioml? If he prefers Cued Speech that's his right. Just leave him alone.

Anyways back to topic, Way to go, NAD. :)

LOL! U got me suckered!!!

Loml is a smart individual and I am sure he has a lot to offer if he could just get out of the CS one-track mind and engage in other topics but who am I to tell people what to do?

There are no solutions there.

"Position statements" are not intended to produce solutions. They are intended to state the position of a company. Hence the terms "position statement" and not "problem-solving statement."

If you'll note, the OP quotes NAD as supporting ASL but it does not say "ASL only."

You're doing a great job of impersonating AGB here.

They are there, you simply refuse to see them. Or are so blinded by cues that you can't see them. At this point, I don't know which it is.
