MySpace.com has identified and removed 90,000 convicted sex offenders from its popular online social-networking site, according to one of the dozens of state attorneys general who pressured the site to beef up its safety standards.

Richard Blumenthal, the attorney general of Connecticut who spearheaded the campaign to subpoena MySpace, told CNN Radio he found the number "appalling."

"These convicted, registered sex offenders clearly create profiles seeking to prey on children," he said, adding, "This revelation is totally appalling and unacceptable, and this shocking revelation, resulting from our subpoena, also provides compelling proof that social networking sites remain ripe with sexual predators."

Calls to MySpace's corporate office were not immediately returned Tuesday.

In May 2007, MySpace announced that it would provide the coalition of state attorneys general with information on sex offenders who use the site.

"We have zero tolerance for sexual predators on MySpace," Hemanshu Nigam, chief security officer for the site, said at the time, as he introduced a tool known as Sentinel SAFE to track online sex offenders.

MySpace had initially refused to comply with the subpoena, citing federal privacy laws.

90,000!?

geez. let's hope they all keep finding the sicko pervert sex offenders to keep them out. thats a lot and more. :(

and sadly there are even more not yet identified or begun to prey on children

Wow, that's a lot of offenders lurking on that site, I hope they do the same with Facebook.

my ex boyfriend was one of those, his exwifes parents turned him in because they didn't like him. He was 18 his wife was 17 at the time. It is a good idea tho there is alot of people that are on the list that they did do bad things.

Not surprisingly, that's a lot of number to be curbed out.

At least something is taken in action to be done about this. Surely, curbing all 90k sex offenders on myspace won't exactly solve the problem because there are still a lot more out there registering under a false name or establishing a profile that does not display a lot more to it.

Um... are you saying that the ex-boyfriend went to jail because he was 18 and his wife was 17? If that was the case, then why did they allow them to get married in the first place?

18-year old person having a relationship with a 17-year old person is pretty common and doesn't make one a sex offender. However, it is different if the 18-year old person formed a relationship with a 14-year old person.

True. The 17 year old was only one year away to legal age...big whoop. Very stupid.

But anyway, in many cases, a sex offender can be labled faster than being shot, robbed, raped, and so on even when there's not specific proof to this.

A friend has told me a story where a man was in a hurry since he really got to use the bathroom VERY bad and he ran to the gas station but the bathroom was either used or locked, and he ran around outside to get into the bushes and urinate, and one of the children saw him, confusing the child as she asked her mother what the man was doing and she called the cops on him assuming he was jerking off but he told them he cant hold it any longer and had to use the bathroom somewhere so they labled him sex offender even thou they didnt believe him.

So it's possible. not ALL sex offenders are actual sex offenders. Judge them until proven guilty.

Labeling him as sex offender due to age isnt good enough even if there's no proof that he "raped" the girl or whatever.

I think it need new rule for sex offenders and ban them to access to internet or life in prison.

Any people who emerging into sex offenders would learn their lesson about rights being taken away or last chance then you are go bye because of life in prison.

Sex offenders shouldn't be on the internet at all, period!

Good that MySpace kicked them out, but sadly there are so many more that are yet to be identified as sex offenders.

good riddance. I hope Holder and his DOJ are tougher on sex crimes like it was during Bush.

That's great Myspace got rid of 90,000 sex offenders off the site. I am sure there are more and hope they are cleared out. I am wondering if it will catch on to other sites like facebook, tag, etc..
