My elderly uncle has purchased a hearing aid! My parents have been telling him for years to get HA's but he kept refusing HA's. Maybe, next time, I will inform him of the benefits of two HA's. :giggle: I understand if he could only buy one HA for financial reasons.

Good for your uncle. I think Medicare might have a small benefit to help with that, but not certain.

SJCSue: Has your uncle noticed any difference since getting one hearing aid? Does anyone else notice the difference in him "hearing somewhat"?

My uncle is very hard of hearing. I only saw once with the HA (at my nephew's birthday party on Saturday) but it seems to me, that my dad is not talking as loud as he did to Uncle Pete (not his real name).

That is progress-finally for your Uncle "Pete".

well 2 hearing aids are better than just one!
I wish your uncle a good luck on the hearing aid!

How about Council on Ageing , they might help with the cost of a second HA or could help your uncle find an agency could help. It is very common for older people to reusing to buy or wear HA. I had a few clients that hated wearing their new HA!

Considering Uncle "Pete" reluctance to buy one hearing aid in the first place-even though "required"-probably some time should be spent for him getting used to the one he has now. He himself will arrive at the conclusion when a second one is needed.

Of course, not knowing his actual age/severity of hearing loss/income thus hard to advise what to do next.

I was talking to Uncle Pete before at my niece's birthday party. He said that his HA is very inexpensive one. He also said that he should into buying a good set of HA's.

I know a good brand that should work for him

maybe talk him into getting hiself some Oticons
these are good hearing aids and I'm wearing the brand right now

he should get hiself some Phonaks 2

As for which of the various models of Hearing Aids available that should be discussed and tested with his audi. I used Phonak LL6 for a number of years prior to becoming bilaterally deaf in 2006. It was the ONLY ONE I could use. Only Uncle "pete" can determine which appears to him to be the "best".

I really feel that your uncle should make the decision on whether he want to have one hearing aid or two hearing aids. It is all up to him. You can not tell him to get hearing aids if he does not want to get another one or prefer none at all.

I tried that with my mother when she lost her hearing years ago (she passed away in 2006). She refused to wear hearing aid and my sister tried to tell her that our mother need hearing aid to hear sounds, but she stubbornly refuse to. So we left her alone. That is sad but still it is all up to the individual's decision to have hearing aids or none at all.

So don't force your uncle to wear hearing aids like it is a must. Just letting you know how it goes with the person's decision at his age. :)
