Actually, he was my great uncle. He was born in Brooklyn, New York (Red Hook) and served in the US Navy during WWII. He survived the Pearl Harbor attack, then the ship he was on got hit by a Japanese Kamikaze, which killed everyone on board except him and one other survivor. He had amnesia for 5 years afterward ... didn't know his name, who his family was, and the Navy, overwhelmed with a war, couldn't identify exactly who he was either. One day, sitting in the VA, he remembered the street he grew up on, but that was it. So, an RN decided they should go visit the street, in Red Hook, Brooklyn, to see if anything else would jar his memory.
My nana was sitting on their front stoop when she saw him walking down the street. She thought he was a ghost. Other people who knew him recognized him too. My nana quickly ran inside to tell my great grandmother that Warren was home. She thought it was mistake, it had to be somebody else. When they arrived on the front stoop, and my great grandmother saw her son, whom she thought had died, she fainted.
He eventually got all of his memory back, except for the attack on his ship.
My Aunt's tribute:
Godspeed Uncle Warren

Today we say goodbye to my Uncle Warren. He was a loving husband and father. He loved his country and served it well, he served during WWII and then volunteered thousands of hours serving veterans. He worked hard to support his wife and kids and even helped many times extended family members. He was the kind of guy they made John Wayne movies about, who did the right thing just because it was the right thing to do. My generation owes a lot to his generation. We will miss you.
Godspeed Uncle Warren
