Correct if Im wrong, but I think I know what this poster is trying to say. Remember I am not a native ASL'er, so if I got any part wrong don't shoot me lol.

I understand that it costs a lot of money and is very expensive to get a cochlear implant.I feel it is a waste of time and a waste of all that money to get a cochlear implant. To spend that much money on a CI is crazy as it is way too much money.

I feel the cochlear implant is not good. I would rather save my money in the bank than to spend it on getting a cochlear implant. Saving my money is the right thing to do than to spend it on a cochlear implant.

What would your choice be? Would you choose to buy a cochlear implant for yourself if your insurance doesnt pay for it? Does your insurance cover a CI surgery? I dont think there is a fund for people that want a cochlear implant that doesnt have insurance or the money to pay for one is there?

Some deaf are not interested in getting a CI. Some deaf people don't understand about CI's and think that it is not an option for them. I say nothing about that, and let them make their own decisions.

Bear, right, your guess is as good as mine, tho.....I was merely puzzled at this poster's initiating this topic as this poster had a really bad experience with a CI,(pain in head, etc) and this went on for a longgggg time and I think we all thought he had this CI removed recently. That's why I'm perplexed at the initiation of this thread by this poster.

Yeah, same here.

Well maybe he wants to hear our view on this issue.

For myself, I wouldn't pay a cochlear implant out of my own pocket but however if it's cover by the insurance then sure why not. :dunno:

Could be but as Tousi points out, it is a little bizarre anyway. If I were in his (smithtr) position, the last thing I would want to talk rationally about would be CIs at least for a while. If anything, I would be warning folks that there can be serious side effects and leave it at that.

You bring an interesting point. Knowing what I know now, there is no question I would do what I could to obtain one. But it is a valid observation to have to consider at what point does the cost become a factor that weighs against the benefits (of which are not guaranteed).

I do think companies often will make reasonably rational choices to find a happy medium cost wise to get more buyers. This would be true whether subsidies (in the form of health insurance) exist or not. I will agree it is not always the case as we can see from the cost of HAs which lots more people can benefit from than CIs. In this case, it is the brutal fact of captive markets that hold sway here (think how the oil companies have us over the barrel).

My C.I. is covered by insurance company in full so only thing I just pay for is the medications to heal from the sugery. If you want C.I., best thing to do is check with your health provider to see if you insurance will cover the cost of C.I., Mine did.

My CIs were covered by private insurance. My only cost has been around a $1,000 after surgery, then I met my maxed for the year. My insurance has a maxed of 1300 a year. After you meet that, they pay 100% of everything until the next year.

I make small payments monthly of what I owe the hostipal.

I thought so too, Angel.

Travis, I hope Bear understood you correctly.

Anyway to answer your question, I'd not pay for my implants with my own money but I'd certainly get my insurance to pay for it.

As far as I know, there's no fund or anything like that for people who want CIs but can't afford them. I could be wrong though. Medicare will pay for your first implant but not your second one.

As far as other deaf adults go, if they don't want them they don't have to get them as far as I'm concerned.

My parents (and family) had to pay for my cochlear implant. My insurance company refused to pay for my right ear to be implanted because of "rollback options." What was infuriating was no changes in coverage were ever mentioned or indicated. I am glad so many have had good coverage by their insurance companies.
I was not receiving benefits from my power hearing aid anymore in my left(my right ear was my "dead" ear, so HA didn't work well.) The CI was my only other option... I was implanted just this last wednesday. I'm excited. =D

If any deaf adults want to spend their money on cochlear implants if their insurance doesn't covered it, it's up to them, their personal choice, It's their pursuit of happiness. It's about them securing their own rights. Everyone has the right to live theirs own lives, and pursue their own happiness. If it makes them happy to have cochlear implants let them. I have no say on what they decided for themselves. ;)

there is a fantastic group called Let Them Hear. They handle insurance appeals and denials. They handled my insurance denials for over a year until my cis were approved. If you go to there web site at letthemhear.org, they might be able to get your insurance company to approve it. it does not hurt to ask them for help. Yes, it is all free.

Ditto!

Healthcare cover 100% the cost for CI surgery including spa, etc. I can get if I want to but I do not feel moviate myself enough to get CI.
