So I am excited to have my very first car (bit of a late bloomer on driving because either A. I didn't have a car or B. no one to teach me and no money to at the time) It's a 91 Toyota Camry auto, 213k, shes not turbo but she runs smoothly and have great breaks! Only thing that was bad about her was she had a small tear on the front side bumper and she was savaged. The owners wanted $1500 originally we settled for $1300 and it was such a relief! She really has some potential though! Might not be a new car, might not be completely perfect but she is to me, shes my POS :-D

Anyways clearly you can see I'm happy but I wanted to hear you guy's first car stories! :D

Nice! My first car was a 90 alltrac corolla with 110k for $1,200. Cars have gotten expensive.

Do you know what the maintenance records are? I dont belive thats an interference motor but its still nice to know.

My first car was an Olds 98 which a friend sold to me because he thought the transmission was going on it(found that out years later). I blew the timing chain after maxing out the car out few times so it only lasted six months. I had bought it four months before I got my license(I was 16 at the time) and my parents gave me a hard time about it me for months.

It wasn't my best car, but it was my first.

'68 Camaro convertible - yellow with black top/interior.
Sister bought it new, dad bought it from sister, I drove it to H.S. & college and eventually bought it from my dad. Kept it even after buying my 2nd car, new Escort Wagon (small family car in anticipation). Had to sell her :( when we went through bankruptcy/foreclosure because we were moving to an apartment and didn't want to keep her in the apt complex parking lot.

Wow! That's a fancy first car! I'd probably be dead if I had that much power at 16.

That's a great car, was it a Rally Sport? I had a 1968 Firebird, 350, two barrel, three speed. The steering wheel had the original firebird(wings down) emblem.

Yeah, it was an RS. When we moved into our last house, we had the exterior refurbished and painted back to it's original color (canary yellow?) and put her in the garage with a cover on her. We had hoped to get the engine rebuilt some time. Never did though. :(

She didn't have all orignal parts by the time we sold her (such as the radio). She had hidden headlights, but at some point that motor died and I can't remember, but I think we just left the lights in the open position rather than replace the motor.

63 Ford Falcon station wagon in the late 1970's. It was pretty worn out, but I loved it. Wish I had it back today and it would be a classic if restored. :)

I first bought the van plymouth 1999 when I was 30. I was preggy at this time so i need a space car when my daughter came.

Before that I borrowed my parents car all the time then i lived in DC so i dont need a car. I relied on the subway for 12 yrs. :)

My first one to own was a 1958 2 door Chevy Delray with NO options on it — not even a radio!

I bought it in December of 1964 after having driven a manual transmission just one afternoon. One thing that I both hated and had some fun with was the clutch spring. The previous owner was a part owner of a trucking company where they did their own repairs. They put a TRUCK spring (not one from a pickup either) on that car. They fun part was not to tell someone (especially a guy) about it before the first time they would drive it. It would always jump out on them and kill it! What I hated about it was trying to hold the car on a steep hill such as a railroad subway. I would feel it in my leg afterwards.

$1,300 for that car? IMO you paid too much especially with over 200k miles on the odometer. I wouldn't even LOOK at a car with so many miles since that's likely to start falling apart.

Did the previous owners do any recent maintenance such as replacing the radiator, transmission, etc...?

As for me I got Ford Mustang 80ish year (forgot the exact year) Before you get all excited I got the economy version with 4 cylinders and 4 speed manual transmission. In other words you could walk faster than my car. But it was reliable and cheap and a good car for my reckless age. I know that if I got a faster car you'd be reading about me in the obituaries!

Congrats! If it's reliable and in good shape, price sounds fine, just know that there are some things that probably are worn out that will come up. I bought my current car new in 2000, and it had many things come up last year (alternator, coils, head gasket, power window motors) that all add up. I''m considering getting an old car to replace it and just pay to get it back in shape.

I've been looking for a smaller car for the past couple of months. Where I'm at anything less that $2k gets you a rust bucket with more than 200k on it. I think she did good if she can put it on the road with no work. Prices have gone insane the past 5 years or so in the used car market.

What color is the smoke that comes from the exhaust?

The color of the smoke can show "why" there is visible smoke.

I understand. I was wondering why he was asking about smoke, no one said it was smoking so it sounded like a mean statement. Unless I missed something.

They can last a long time it's just that usually when cars get past 200k they start needing major work. It might seem like a great deal buying a car for only 1 grand but then you have to spend something like 3 grand just to get it back in a reliable condition. And the end result will still be a POS with some new parts.

If you think about it there's a reason why they want to sell it instead of keeping it.

Depends on how well they are maintained. The last two cars my wife has had where approaching 300k when we gave them to my dad. One of them he's still driving. My jeep has 202k and is still going strong. It may be a lot of miles but she's already bought the car so why rain on her parade?
