My deaf resources for teaching myself ASL

I finally found the box in our garage from the move from Missouri.

I have Signing for Dummies with CD
The American Sign Language Phrase Book by Lou Fant
2 puzzle books for Lou Fant's book
A Spark Chart for ASL
I also use LifePrint.com and ASLPro.com

I have been checking out stuff from the library as well.

What I need to ask is:

Most of the videos at the library (VHS and DVD) are the ones to teach children and babies signing. Since I am ahem...46, Other than being a little young for me, would they be good for me to use. I learn better by seeing it done as opposed to pictures in a book.

I do have a webcam on my netbook that I don't like to use, but not on my desktop.

Can anyone make any suggestions?

I cannot afford to go to the local college for any classes and I am waiting for the local Deaf Service Center to have an ASL class. Their donations have dropped off and their not sure when they will have a class.

I don't believe it is good idea to teach yourself ASL.

Anyway, the deaf/blind agency in PBC (WPC) may have something that you could take up ASL courses at no charge or for very little money.

Give Deaf Service Center of Palm Beach County a call.

You could try to post in Facebook to see if anyone would have info where you could take non-college ASL courses locally. Perhaps you would make new friends who are willing to teach you ASL? :)

None. I haven't found any since we moved here in June. I am kept real busy with mother and mother-in-law. I am going to check into a place whre they have a bunch of deaf meets and games both days and weekends.

I hope to find someone real soon. I have made a few calls and sent a few requests out today so we will see. Some people from church are also checking with their friends and co-workers to see if they can find anything out for me. I don't work at a job. My home life keeps my overly busy.

The main reason is that you would not know what is correct and what is in error.
You would also miss out on learning proper syntax and cultural lessons.

I would not try to teach myself to be a Teacher, Surgeon, Nurse ~ same/same with a language that is not your first language.

Two of the books, the CD's and one of the websites each mentions the proper syntax and cultural lessons. I have also learned alot here on AllDeaf.

As an update, I have gotten in with the Palm Beach County Association of the Deaf and will be having some help there. I am still on the waiting list for ASL classes through the Deaf Service Center of Palm Beach County.

When I went to a deaf club movie night at PBCAD this past Friday night, they all said that since I am a late deafened adult, and my family is all hearing, they suggest that I learn sign and sign in English order for now, they will help me with the proper syntax after I have more signs learned. They also told me to bring all of my books with me to a Deaf Social on Tuesday and they will help and advise on what not to do. 2 of the people are ASL instructors and are willing to help each Tuesday. They also do the classes at the Deaf Service Center and are waiting until DSC has the funds for the class. Until then and even after, I can get the help while at the deaf social.
