My day with LT Dan

Yesterday, the LT Dan Band performed at the football stadium of the Citadel college in Charleston. Gary Sinise of CSI NY and Forrest Gump fame plays the bass guitar and the name of the band comes from his character in the movie.

The Lowcountry Patriot Guard riders were the hosts this year. We provided the logistics, security and escorts for the wounded veterans and their families. Previous years were held in Beaufort, SC. This location can accommodate more people. One hundred percent of ticket and t-shirt sales go into the fund to provide trac-chairs for the handicapped who want to go where their wheelchairs cannot. These chairs come in a variety of styles and cost approximately $15,000 each. Two were given out at the concert and at least 10-20 more were paid for through auction bids. A new Harley Davidson with Gary's signature on it went for $100,000. Earlier in the day was a handicapped bicycle ride and 5K run.

In Beaufort two years ago he came off stage and posed for pictures. I took one of him playing his guitar from five feet away!

Here are more pics from other companies showing off their equipment. They were letting people take them for a test ride. One guy took the small, four wheeled chair out onto the street and he pulled a wheelie and it seemed to be able to go about 30 mph.

There was one chair that was wireless remote controlled for a person who would be unable to use the controls themselves.

The machines I checked out carry two car-size batteries. The run time averaged about 20 hours before recharging. Some have a reduced cruise setting and can switch to heavy-duty hill climbing.

These companies are not just for physically handicapped military. Anyone can purchase one in any color or configuration.
