Who is a Vet did something tonight and I just found out.
When she moved out she also took a dog I brought back with me from Kentucky years ago, a Jack Russle Terrier. Awesome and well trained dog that came from a shelter. The lady I was dating ( long distance) lived in a apartment/duplex type subdivision, well a new owner took over a week before I made another trip down and said pets not allowed anymore. She couldnt afford to move and didnt want the dog to go back into a shelter so she asked me if I wanted him, which I did decide to adopt from her. Well, I surprised my daughter when I got back and they bonded instantly. I think my daughter was between 5 and 7 years old at the time, will be 21 this august. Anyways, here is what she did tonight.

hope the debt isn't as high like other vets coming out of school....

Such a great story!!! That is one of the best stories I've ever read about long distance relationships. Thank for sharing!!!

Yes, she actually was to graduate high school after her second year ( she had all credits, but she wanted to graduate with her class so she stayed in HS and also went to college for dual credits... so she had a head start since she was 15-16 years old. Graduated her college course when she was 18.
She already had a part time job at a vet during school, then started full time, got some experience where she started then found a great place to work and been there ever since. All her co workers are females and they are all like sisters, they do alot of activities outside of work from dinners to helping place homeless animals and adoptions from the shelters. She loves her furry friends for sure.
She is not a full blown vet yet, but her main position is assisting with all surgeries. so she is in good hands at her place of empoyment as her boss is showing her the ropes first hand. My daughter is like me, gore doesnt bother us and she loves it. Her boss wants her to succede as he sees that she is willing to learn and not afraid to do surgeries. They have had a couple of high risk surgeries and loss a few lives on the table ( it was bound to happen as the conditions were terminal with 50/50 chances due to tumors ect...) My daughter has even adopted a few animals that the owners couldnt afford the surgeries, and nursed them back to health. I told her she was going to be a crazy cat lady if she didnt slow down...lol. She has even covered the costs for a few people who couldnt afford the surgeries out of kindness.

Is she planning on going to college to become a vet? 8 years of schooling is a long time.

Yes, But Im thinking her boss is helping her, something like a crash course. I believe there is something like a "Test In" and she gets placed where her knowledge sets her. She knows all the meds and dosages, she knows everything in surgery already and can actually perform the surgeries now, although because of laws the doc has to be the primary and she is considered an assistant for now. I think with the docs vouching for her she will advance further along, but I dont know the whole story on this yet. But she really wants to open her own vet.

what a cute tat! congrats on a really smart daughter!

may I give you an unsolicited advice - it's a very competitive world now- soon it will be even more 'cutthroat',
perhaps it would be a smart thing to assure she'll have all the necessary diploma in order
if she plans to open her own clinic and work as a veterinarian in future :)

otherwise she might end up as mere technician, and while it is a great thing also,
it could be tad restrictive to what she really could be..
She's very young, there is no hurry, really :)

Yes we know, It is a high turnover as well at some places ( like where she started) they had and loss new employees almost weekly. That was one reason she left there(after a year) she has been at the new place a couple years now and she loves it. She will be taking all required courses and tests to get everything she needs under her belt, and being she is doing surgeries now she will have an upper hand starting out. Her boss thinks she will get and complete everything in maybe 4 years with the experience because he is teaching her as they go... No one else there wants to do surgeries and he enjoys her help as well. There are 3 Vets at her work ( its an Animal Hospital,) so it actually frees up the other Vets times. They even fight over her for the day to work with them...lol She thinks its funny too.

She should read the blog Veterinarians Behaving Badly and think really deeply about if she's willing to be underpaid, overworked, scand be willing to spend the rest of her life in an industry that has one of the highest suicide risks, it's higher than regular medical doctors. There is no need for the amount of vets that the schools are pumping out, and most struggle pay their vet school debt and make ends meet.

Ditto in some places its hard to find vets. Its harder to get into vet school than medical school.

Actually, that is beyond smart. I believe you need four years undergrad and four years vet school. You might even need residency.. I think the average is 11 years or so.

I believe she said it was 8 years, but she may shorten that a bit by testing in.
