It looks like you have a moderate to profound loss in your right ear and a moderate to severe loss in your left.

How well do you think your hearing aids help you?

His left ear can easily have good aided results to 6KHz, his right ear to 3KHz. Unaided, he would hear environmental sounds to 1000Hz and his left ear can hear a loud whistle unaided. Has your hearing got worse from last time? I am probably getting an updated audiogram on the 24th.

How do you know that, deafdude?

When I used to have a moderately-severe loss, I couldn't hear a loud whistle unaided.

You can't just guess what an individual hears or doesn't hear based on an audiogram. If I am in a room and someone blew a whistel I could hear it with background noise it's a no go. When my loss was just mild/moderate and i didn't have aids on i couldn't hear the whistle half the time depending where I was on the field when i played soccer. Everyone hears differently.

What do you think I can hear aided and unaided? Just out of curiosity...

deafdude's next question to you may be what your aided scores are. :)

Functioning

I get along fairly well with my HA's(powerful analogs) but my ent says that as I age(36 next month) my hearing will most likely continue to decline. I have been informed that a CI or whatever else comes down the pike will have to considered around 45 or 50 maybe sooner.

I measured a whistle as 120db SPL from 0.05 feet(0.6 inch) which at 5 feet decreases to 80db SPL. A whistle can be 3000Hz, sometimes higher and a moderate loss at 250Hz can easily slope into profound in the high frequencies so it's plausable you couldn't hear whistles unaided. I can't hear a whistle *aided*

Using the same math and whistle, at 50 feet, it would be just 60db SPL. The background noise could drown out high pitch sounds. Youd hear the low frequency background noise much stronger than high frequencies, It's the same for most of us, including me.

Ive read your blog and learned alot about you and your deaf identity. Unaided, sounds would need to be so loud that youd feel strong vibrations before you start to hear them. Aided with your Phonak Naida V UP(?) HAs youd hear up to 40db across the board up to 1000Hz. I don't know what gain you choose and what gain your audiologist set it at. If I had to guess, you might have chosen to hear only at 55db aided. :hmm: You might hear something if you crank your computer speakers up and press your ear flat against it. I have 110-115db loss at 1000Hz and barely hear anything at that frequency. I hear low frequencies so much better, you probably know what it's like before you lost 30db of hearing. I also respect your decision not to get CI and can understand your reasons why.

Yea, that's presbycuisis for you. My own hearing got worse at frequencies above 500Hz and I can't seem to hear above 2250Hz, maybe 2500Hz on a good day. I do need to have transposition enabled(my audiologist says it's on but testing proved it's not.) Also I feel those HAs can be maxed out as well and ill hear so much better. As for CI, I think by the time I(and you) need one, a cure will be in clinical trials and CI will be quickly phased out.

I know it's plausible not to hear a whistle unaided with a moderately-severe loss because that's what I experienced. Even if you said it wasn't plausible, it wouldn't matter since this was my experience and no one knows what I hear and don't hear except me.

As for being unable to hear a whistle aided, I haven't been able to do that since 1994.

Of course, now that I have CIs, I can. :)

There won't be a cure for hearing loss in 10-20 years. They've been touting hair cell regeneration for the past 25 years yet it hasn't come to fruition.

As for CIs being phased out, I don't see that happening. Even if hair cell regeneration sees the light of day, it won't cure all forms of deafness.

Hence, CIs will still be needed for those who cannot take advantage of hair cell regeneration -- not to mention those of us like myself who are already implanted.
