Being hearing, I thought that asking the deaf what they think about musicals might be a bit... off color, so I hope this doesn't offend anyone. But I was recently at a showing of "Annie" down here in Florida and I saw someone signing the whole thing on the side of the stage, and I thought that was pretty cool. So is anyone here interested in musicals? I'm obsessed. Rent's my favorite. I want to write one at some point during my life.

Right now, I'm totally obsessed with Wicked. Amazing show. Also one of my alltime favorites is Les Miz.

Wicked was incredible, yeah. I wanted to see Les Miserables myself, but I never got around to it. Hairspray's also pretty good.

Musicals can be movie, too, right? I just saw Dreamgirls captioned and it was INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!

.

I never saw it. Recommend it?

I did see Marie Antoinette with captions though. It was the first time I've ever been to a captioned movie, and I saw some people speaking in ASL outside of the theater afterwards. I did the WORST possible thing and stopped and stared (because I was really interested and I'm trying to learn the language) and I think they took offense. I felt SO bad.

i love musicals.........just got back from ave q, seen the wedding singer, les mis, phantom of the opera, joseph and the amazing technicolr dreamcoat, beauty and the beast, and lots lots more.............

How was Ave. Q? I heard it was a little raunchy. True? Fauxgasm, go see les Miz if you get the chance. So, so good. will have you sobbing in the first fifteen minutes. Was Rent the movie like Rent the play?

Yes highly recommend it. You won't believe Jennifer Hudson's performance.

And lol don't feel bad. It depends on the type of group you happen upon. I myself don't really like it all the time when someone does that to me and my group of friends, but if the person is really friendly, then sometimes it's fun. Just depends on if it's interrupting our conversation or not, but I ALWAYS welcome and happy when hearing learning sign language!!!

Please don't take offense older Deaf - but seems that older Deaf after ages 50 seem don't mind more when you approach them...

Please correct me, that's fine, just an observation! :D

Funny thing you brought up music.... I play the piano, sax, and drums... and I am close to profoundly deaf. It's the music i can read and the feeling of the music beat or vibrations that i enjoy.

Never limit yourself in any circumstances.. I am deaf/amputee and i still keep myself busy. My father taught me that just because I can't join the Marines, doesn't mean I can't have the spirit of the Marines. It's the human spirits that thrives us to keep on living.

I'm profoundly deaf, and I love music. I have a lot of dvd musicals. I haven't been to plays but I did help manage a musical in high school of peter pan.

I've noticed many deaf say "I"m deaf, I don't need music" And I strongly disagree. Everyone needs music. it's part of life.

I agree. Its the rhythm as much as melody.

Music is not a big part of my life..I only play it while driving to keep me from being bored. Is that saying I need it? I love ASL musicals..those are the ones I enjoy more than the musicals that involves vocals.

shel.. I was speaking in terms of how it makes you feel, like feeling a good bass can give you a kick or jump start. Or a soft, soothing vibration can give you a feeling of peace...

For example.. I love the bass in songs like "Cool Rider" from Grease 2 or "Greased Lightning"(Grease) to wake me up or keep me going when i'm driving all over town. But I like the soft vibrations of songs that are ballands or love songs to keep me relaxed and at peace. An example of these.. would be like "hopelessly devoted" from Grease or "Birds of a Feather" *Grease 2*

Get the idea?

Yes, Grease is a musical to Bear, its a classic. I like the Sound of Music one of my favorites.

I loved Grease and Eddie and the Cruisers. And all the great old musicals like South Pacific, Mary Poppins, etc. I'm also a hearing impaired musician so music is an important part of my life. Of course, Saturday Night Fever is one of my all time favorite musical movies. Just thinking about it makes me want to put on my dancing shoes and boogie.

I used to be obsessed with music but maybe it is cuz of how busy my life is, my interest in music has waned. U are right...I just dont think about it anymore. I used to play upbeat music while cleaning up but I havent done that in like 10 years. Wonder why I stopped? I will blame it on my daughter...LOL!

Oh brother... where do I start?.... well, to put it in simple terms, musicals are my life. RENT. Wicked. The Sound of Music (and anything Rodgers and Hammerstein). Mary Poppins (both movie and stage - I know the entire Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious sign-dance!) Chicago. Phantom of the Opera. My Fair Lady. Cabaret. FAME (was in that one in high school - only deafie in a sea of hearing cast members and did just fine - even without an terp half of the time! OH THE HORROR! Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor DReamcoat (saw original tour with Donny Osmond when i was 5 - my first Broadway show!) First terped show - The Lion King.... but even though i am deaf, i have gone to 150 productions of musicals and only 9 terped.... (okay, i admit, 19 of those were variants of "The Sound of Music" which was the first music i heard after my CI surgery when I was 5, way back in 1991. So, yes I absolutely adore musicals! (In fact, I want to establish a theater terp agency to train and distribute theater terps and even be a CDI myself - I've terped musicals several times *grins*). Best part of listening to musicals on my ipod (through CI) is the translating part (what is the songwriter trying to say? Double meaning? Feeling? What is the character thinking?) Working on "La vie Boheme" from RENT and hoping to see it in june with TERPS! (first time, tried to find terp show for RENT but so few and far in between).
