Mother Says Teacher Hit Student, No Legal Action Taken
Mother Says Teacher Hit Student, No Legal Action Taken - Education News Story - KRDO Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A mother claims her child was hit in the head by a teacher at Prairie Hills Elementary school and that District 20 is trying to sweep it under the rug.

Sandra Anderson told KRDO Newschannel 13 the incident happened on March 1.

She said her daughter and two other students were talking. The teacher singled her daughter out and did not discipline the other students, said Anderson.

“When I picked up my daughter she proceeded to tell me she was struck on the top of the head by a teacher,” said Anderson.

Ms. Anderson immediately called the school and had a meeting with the principal who said the district had contacted police and the Department of Human Services.

District 20 released the following statement:

"Academy District 20 Administrative Policy GBEB state that staff is responsible for the education and safety of all students. Policy JKA prohibits physical punishment, according to a statement from D-20.

These policies were applied in the instance involving Sandra Anderson’s daughter.

The policy of the district is to involve law enforcement and DHS in matters where there are allegations against a teacher. Those investigations did occur and there were no findings that warranted any legal action against the teacher."

Ms. Anderson said a police officer came to her home and said he talked with the teacher. She said the officer told her he didn't arrest the teacher because she was upset and seemed sorry.

Ms. Anderson was given a Notification of Victim Rights paper which listed the case title as third-degree assault. She said she is not sure why no legal action was taken and why the school hasn't done anything either.

“She should be suspended or put on administrative leave,” said Anderson.

She said the teacher is still in the classroom and it makes it difficult for her daughter to go to school.

"When I look at her heart as an 11-year-old, there are some bruises there.

Students’ look up to teachers, they're role models," said Anderson.

Ms. Anderson said she assumed the district would take action or at the very least apologize.

"The only resolution he (the superintendent) could give to me was ‘Well, we'll just promise the teacher will not work with your daughter anymore,’” said Anderson.

If you have children saw hit by teacher you can talk like that but this story is serious! I have agree with parents need knowledge when kids not get bruise or have bruise by teachers im sure parents is upset when kids have bruise like head to toes so mom need truth!

I had a somewhat similar incident involving my daughter when she was in Kindergarten. Only it was another student and then lack of anything by the teachers and school. While at recess, the kids lined up to use the "twirly" slide. My daughter got to the top and was scared. She broke out in tears according to one of her classmates. Another little boy went up and pushed my daughter over the side rail and she fell from the top, almost a8 feet to the ground. Luckily for the school, the playground was covered with a 4 inch thick depth of rubber tire chips. So, it was mostly a bounce that happened, but she did hit a piece of concrete as well. According to classmates, my daughter was crying and very distraught. Her teacher did not do a thing. the preschool teacher happened to walk by with her class, and saw my daughter. She gathered up my daughter and rushed her to the school nurse as my daughter had started bleeding both from a cut on the top of her head and through the nose. The nurse cleaned her up and both the nurse and the preschool teacher were trying to get the kindergarten teacher to call me. She refused. I show up to get my daughter and she's covered in scratches and bruises and you can plainly see the hand-prints on her back. I had the school nurse and the principal take pictures. The principal and guidance counselor also contacted the police. The next day I went to take daughter back to school as she was cleared by the doctor, she refused to go to class and was so terrified by the sight of the little boy that the nurse called our doctor to explain and he gave authorization for sedation to calm her down. I withdrew my daughter that day and decided to home school.

Now, the little boy in question? It was found out that he was being physically abused by his father, who was the Captain of the local fire department. This occurred when my daughter was 6; She is still afraid to be alone in the company of any boys except her brother and she will be 18 next week.
