Florida man goes off when customer in front of him exceeds the limit, police

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -
An elderly Florida man is accused of attacking another Walmart customer who tried to check out more than 20 items in the express lane.

William E. Golladay, 77, faces felony battery charges for attacking 65-year-old John L. Malherbe at a Walmart in Punta Gorda over the weekend, Fort Myers TV station WZVN reported.

Malherbe told police Golladay began counting his items as he checked them out.

When Malherbe exceeded 20 items, Golladay began yelling and shoved his shopping cart into him, police said.

Golladay was escorted outside, but later returned and approached Malherbe with his fists raised.

He was again escorted outside the store.

Oh wow, I'm sad that some people don't respect express checkout.

There has to be something in Florida drinking water that causing people to act violent.

To be fair, sometimes the clerks motion for us to go to the express lane because the other lines are backed up and their lane is open. I always dread that because I don't want to offend someone with fewer than 20 items who might show up after I've started unloading my cart.

In any lane that we're in, if we have a lot of stuff and someone with a couple items shows up, we let them go ahead.

I don't count the items of the customer ahead of me--life's too short. (However, I'm paranoid about keeping my basket within the limit. :giggle: )

Agree...I always count my items if I'm just getting a few things. And at stores where they don't have express lanes, if my basket is full and someone behind me only has a few things, I let them get ahead of me....feel it's the courtesy thing to do.

The Express Lane at the store we shop at removed the item limitation(but is still an Express Lane) a couple of years ago and the feeling you just described has pretty much waned here........

Yikes, someone is being grumpy!

I been told it was OK to use the express lane at few times, I only had a few items over the limit . I know what you mean, I had people ram their shopping cart into me because I am HOH and can't hear them trying to pass me. You can never tell what a person will do to you today over a small thing.

Sounds like your store's going the way mine has as I mentioned above in post #9......

The People of Walmart strikes again!

Man what's up with the oldies here in Florida lately! :ugh: Remind me to avoid the elderly when I'm out and about....

In all fairness, most of these people aren't "Floridians", they just retired here....

Wirelessly posted

This is why I go to Wal-Mart for certain things once a month: batteries, women's personal items, and if I need things for school.

I tend to go when there are no shoppers (late at night) and never have more that 15 items. Typically a few of us will car pool (three or four of us). We also let people in front of us go since we are all leaving together.

If I can avoid it I don't shop there. Too many bad things happen there.
