More than 180 people were killed Monday after a magnitude-7.5 earthquake hit Afghanistan, rattling the country and sending tremors through neighboring Pakistan and India. Officials called it the strongest earthquake to strike Afghanistan in decades.

Pakistani officials said at least 147 people were killed and nearly 600 others wounded across the country, while Afghan officials said 33 people were killed and more than 200 wounded.

In Afghanistan's Takhar province, at least 12 students at a girls' school were killed in a stampede as they fled shaking buildings, said Sonatullah Taimor, the spokesman for the provincial governor. Another 42 girls were taken to the hospital….

:( How horrible , I saw this on the news but it was not know yet how many people were killed.

:( oh no what another tragedy!

My two teen nieces were adopted < a couple years apart, to one family> from India as toddlers. A couple of years ago their parents and the two girls went to India as part of a regional group of adoptive families with Indian children, to help the children learn more about their origins. They saw some of the caregivers of the girls who helped them as babies many years ago. This Summer the older niece who just turned 18, went back to India as part of a service-oriented trip. She assisted with childcare at the orphanage or care facility where she personally had been as a toddler. I'm sad to think of all the people she may know in India who are affected....very sad for everyone in that large region!
