So after years of my mom being anti-sign... she is finally going to be taking an ASL class!!! After the past year, seeing how much more I understand in Sign than i do spoken english, seeing how much happier I am, and (I believe this might be why she is doing it) because my niece is HoH and using sign language. No matter the reason though, I am very excited for my mom to learn ASL!! it is going to make things so much easier to chat with her... and we will have far fewer miscommunications I think. I am very excited!!! Finally, my mom will be able to have an actual conversation with her :deaf: daughter!!!

I know!!! I am so excited!!! she texted me last night... telling me she just got back from her first ASL class and wanted to skype. she was so proud of herself to being able to do the alphabet! I was very proud of her too!! then she called me (thankfully via vrs, she has FINALLY after almost 21 years of knowing i'm deaf learned I CAN'T talk on the phone) and told me that she chatted with her ASL instructor (who is Deaf) and told him she has a Deaf daughter, she said she can finally admit I am Deaf and not just HoH!!! He said he was proud of her for learning sign even though I am almost 23, and that we may end up having a better relationship. I am so happy!!!

You just made me smile! I vote this the best post of the day :)

Yep. At the end of the story, ASL comes out on the top....

yes it does. and I'm so thankful that my mom is finally going to be communicating with me on MY level, not what is the most comfortable for her.

You have gone on your journey of discovering your Deafness, and now your mom is on her journey. It is a wonderful thing that she has decided to explore your Deaf identity as well as her identity of mother to a Deaf daughter. I know from experience that she will learn much about herself in the process. Hugs to you and your mom.

So many people never get to experience this because their parents and family members never move beyond insisting that the Deaf person communicate on their hearing terms. Be sure to let your mom know how special she is.

Or they do so only superficially by embracing an MCE instead of ASL. Ash has a rare parent.

I do have a rare parent... and I'm thankful for her! I'm so happy that she can move out of her comfort zone and embrase my natural language... learn something new. My sister is doing the same, for her daughter and for me.

This is begining to make up for the fact i was raised 100% orally growing up... I hope it lasts!

Better late than never!

I'm excited that your Mom wants to learn ASL. My girlfriend and her Mom each want to take ASL class. It costs $125 each plus $30 for one book. I don't know how much it's costing your Mom. I told my girlfriend that it's too much money. Are you sure you want to do that? They said yes, I am worth it!!!

I bet your Mom feels you are worth it regardless of how much it costs.

That is what and why every hearing parents should do in first place as soon as their young Deaf child(ren) are able to understand and communicate in ASL, starting with Baby Signs.

That is so wonderful, Ash! :)

my moms asl class is 250 + book... here where I live... its closer to 500+... not including books. I'm looking at taking another ASL class... I think it could be helpful for me... but i have to save up the $ for it first.
