Free Bed Shaking Fire Alarms For The Deaf - KPLR
Safety officials are now applauding the idea of shaking the hearing-impaired awake in case of a fire. The West Overland fire district is the first to land a grant to make the devices available to some of its residents. The devices are tied into ordinary smoke alarms. They start off the "Bed Shaker" mechanism and are designed to wake those who cannot hear.
The West Overland grant is for $1,500 and is being provided by the firemen's fund insurance company. The assistant fire chief says he's been told more grant money could on the way.
"People are vulnerable when they're sleeping. Think about how vulnerable they are. They don't know what's going on and our job is to save lives." said Asst. Chief Raymond Hake of the West Overland Fire Dist
The "Bed Shaker" alarms sell for about $700 each. That's why area departments are seeking more grants to make the new devices free.
