I always urge parents of dhh kids to bombard them with EVERYTHING. Meaning, speech, Sign, Cued Speech (I know, I know, but it may help as a supplement) and a variety of both Deaf and hearing interventions, such as schools, camps , social groups etc. I have a parental friend who is giving her kid everything. Anyway, turns out despite early exposure to Sign, her kids is VERY oral. I was amazed and extremely proud of the mom for giving her kid the choice! The mom says she thinks her kid will sign more as her kid gets older and hits the academic and social "ceilings." She is very open to everything.....When her kid is old enough (prolly middle school) she'll be open to sending her kid to the State Deaf School. The kid is now a little too young to dorm it. She is going to send her kid to the state deaf camp when she is old enough as well. Right now, she's trying for social interaction with other dhh kids. She even tried to get her kid into a local deaf ed program, but was rejected b/c the kid is doing so well. I am AMAZED at how child centered and balanced this parent is. My question is.....why aren't there more parent like this one? I realize that dhh specific resources aren't always available locally.... But why don't we have more parents trying to bombard their dhh kid with everything? Sign, speech, deaf school, deaf camp, deep social interaction with other dhh kids and so on?
