US annual subscription jumping $10 to $60 as prices go up across North America, UK starting November 1; discounts offered in meantime.

Microsoft gave Xbox Live Gold subscribers some good news and some bad news today. The bad news is that starting November 1, the company is instituting a wave of price hikes in the North American and UK Xbox Live subscription plans. The good news is that until those hikes go through, gamers in the US can sign on to a full year of the program or renew their current subscription at a discount.

Currently, a 12-month subscription to Xbox Live Gold sells for $50 in the US. With the November increase, that same term will cost gamers $60, although Microsoft is offering annual subscriptions for $40 until the new pricing takes effect. The month-by-month plan price is also rising from $8 to $10, with three-month plans going up from $20 to $25.

In the UK and Canada, only the month-by-month plans are being adjusted. Canadians will have to pay $10 a month instead of $9, while their transatlantic counterparts will see the cost of the same term jump from £5 to £6. Finally, Mexico's full-year subscription fee is also being amended, rising from its current 499 pesos to 599 pesos.

Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst Jesse Divnich downplayed the importance of the fee hikes, pointing out that the average price of a new game has also jumped from $50 to $60 since Xbox Live's debut in 2002. He said the move would likely do little to impact the Xbox 360's momentum, or even consumers themselves, in the near-term.

"EEDAR does not believe the $10 price increase will fully affect current Xbox Live Gold subscribers until late 2011 and beyond, as Microsoft will likely run numerous promotions allowing users to renew at cheaper rates," Divnich said.

I think it is stupid move for M$ during recession.

I don't need gold membership so silver membership is enough for me.

There are free online multiplayer service on PC (exception of MMO), PS3 and Wii.

Good thing I am on PS3. And if they start charging I am done with online gaming.

I don't think Microsoft care much. The people who can afford to pay the original $50 fee are the ones who are going to pay it. The ones who can't or won't pay the fees are the ones who don't have Xbox Live. So if you don't have Xbox Live to begin with, you probably won't be paying for it; the ones with Xbox Live won't care about the $10 increase.

Recession doesn't have any impact on their pricing plan because... if the recession IS affecting you, then you wouldn't be paying bills for luxury items. So really, the only people that the increase is affecting are the ones who are relatively unaffected by the recession.

Yup, I love PC games. :D

I don't play Xbox Live so much so $60 annually Xbox Live Gold membership is moot.

The cigarettes price went up like crazy then most people still buy the cigarettes and few of people quitted. Same idea people still addicted on video game and hard to quit.

Bad compare, smokers have been declining in over decade as gamers are continue to increase so both of them cannot compare.

Smoker can't quit smoke like gamer can't quit game as they are addicted.

No, smokers are more harder to quit, but you can quit the game so easily is change in your plan and daily activities.

In fact, I'm not addicted to games. ;)

Yeah! I never said it was you.

My point that M$ raising live fees because they knew that some gamers are addicted and wont to quit live when price went up.

No, that's not reason because M$ increased Xbox Live fee.

It is all about inflation and cost of servers to keep Xbox Live running.

Obviously, M$ is greedy corporation.

Just another reason about add or upgrade servers. I still dont understand since all server's hdd, ram, and cpu are become cheaper than before but they still raising the price?

Like around 5 years ago. 1GB of ram for $100 and 250GB for $100.

Right now, 1TB for $100 and 4GB of ram for $100

$10 to $60 as $50 jump higher. That's insane. They should raise to $100 a year.

yes, thats what prophet said-

"analyst Michael Pachter expects Microsoft to raise the price of Xbox Live Gold membership from the current $50 to $100 per year in the next few years."

that’s the other problem — you really want to hook every gamer who has a 360, you want them to buy all their games on 360, play everything multiplayer, pay you 50 bucks a year so that, in a couple years, it’s a 100 bucks a year.”

Not really. You'd play more like everyone else, because once PS3 get money from subscribers, then they will provide better servers, so we play online games with less latency, server crashes, and faster downloads. :D

Well, subscribers make no difference.

You will still experience lag issues with Xbox Live too, especially GOW.

Nothing is free! They work hard! They desserve more money. Make it better network and smooth! Or they mean to reduce crazy ping to low. Make it smooth? lol
