Hi everyone,
Just wanted to let you know about 2 sign interpreted performances for Meetings by Mustapha Matura at the Arcola Theatre, interpreted by Hetty May Bailey
Dates are: Tuesday 7th October and Monday 15th October, 8.15pm (The Tuesday performance is pay what you can!)
About the show:
"You leave a meeting to go an eat mango?"
In 1980s Trinidad the economy is booming and the future seems full of
promise. Hugh and Jean, a high-flying business couple, have every reason
to be happy.
But Hugh is restless. When he meets an old woman selling traditional
Caribbean food he remembers the meals his mother used to make: he realizes
what is missing in his life.
Jean is too busy to cook. She has just landed the best job of her career:
promoting a new brand of American cigarettes.
Starting with food, Hugh begins to change his whole way of life. His
search for happiness leads him away from swimming pools, speed boats and
chicken and chips.
And everything he does drives him and Jean further apart.
The oil boom of the late 70s is a blank cheque to the young and ambitious
but can happiness really be measured in business transactions? Meetings is
a darkly comic look at a generation tempted by the fast cars and fast food
of the American lifestyle but rooted in a more traditional culture. Their
search for an identity, torn between heritage and globalisation, is as
recognisable today as it was in the compelling climate of the 1980s.
Mustapha Matura is an award winning playwright. Since his arrival from
Trinidad in 1961, his work has been seen at the Royal National Theatre,
the Royal Court and the Southwark Playhouse. His most recent works,
Playboy of the West Indies and Trinidad Sisters, were sell-out shows at
top London theatres The Tricycle and The Hackney Empire. He lives in
London and regularly writes for popular website itzcaribbean.com.
Cast: Davinia Anderson, Nicholai La Barrie, Inika Leigh Wright
£13/£9 concessions
Pay what you can on Tuesdays (tickets available from 7pm and subject to
availability).
