It’s never easy to be a senior citizen on a fixed income. To get by, many people depend on programs like Meals on Wheels to get the food they need, especially when unplanned expenses like surgeries or medical bills arise.

There was a problem, however. The people who couldn’t afford food for themselves often also couldn’t afford food for their pets. This usually resulted in the seniors sharing their food with their pets, which also meant both human and animal weren’t getting proper nutrition. Some have even had to give their pets away because of an inability to afford food. For many seniors whose friends and family may have passed or live far away, their animal companions are their best friends.

This was a major problem impacting the people served by Meals on Wheels. In response, the charity came up with a simple but remarkable solution.

They started delivering food for both their human and animal clients.

By ensuring that seniors in need were able to feed themselves and their pets, Meals on Wheels is making sure seniors and their pets can be well-fed and provide companionship for each other.

If you’re a senior over 60 years old and need help getting food, click here to find a Meals on Wheels near you. If you’ve got some time on your hands and compassion for those less fortunate in your community, consider volunteering for Meals on Wheels!

I really like the idea that food is being provided to pets as well. Pets can be a very important part of Meals on Wheels recipients' lives.

Some time the city ACO with give people free pet food too . Animal Control Officer =ACO

Nice, pet food isn't that expensive and its worthwhile.

If you're an elderly person a fixed income caring for a pet is expensive ,you have to pay for vet bills too plus your own meds . I wish the MOW program did that out here too.

I just heard about this too. I think it's overall a great idea. Sometimes a person who needs the Meals on Wheels has no one around otherwise but their pets, who provide such a comfort and, also, then that person still can feel useful because they need to care for the pet too. And the health benefits of living with dogs have been documented.

That is true dogmom , I had clients that had to give up their pets when they moved in senior housing and it was so sad. So some senior housings are allowing people to have a cat or small dog , it made a world of difference to
the person. A house is not a home if there is no pets in it to some people.

:ty:/thanks RR and whatdidyousay!

I've also, like whatdidyousay! - heard that some senior housing places are now allowing people to come in with a small dog or a cat. I do know a couple of people who have this, they are so happy with their little dogs in their senior living place!

Some complexes also have a "Resident cat or dog" too - if a cat, the cat just stays in the complex and meanders around and residents who can, take turns feeding and looking in on the cat, or staff take turns with that.
If a dog in the complex, the dog may go home with a staff member each night.

I worked at senior housing and people could not have pets but when I drove by awhile a go I saw someone with a small dog there. Senior housing is now called 'Low income housing' so anyone can live there now. I feel this is a bad idea , you can get shady people moving in.

my daughter in residential home and they have three legged cat it brings residents so much pleasure.
my sisterinlaw in a residential complex similar to ones you have, they not allowed animals unless they already had one then can take it with them.
I think good idea meals on wheels for animals, even if owners are shady people at least they thinking of animal
