After the first/second map , how often did you go for a map?

a friend of mine says that she went from the start every six months

when starting , isn't needed to be more...often?

Hi Vivie,

From my letter, I am having my implant on the 16th July and will be Switched on sometime a month after the Operation. And in the letter here is my schedule to be expected....

switch on day
Map 2nd or 3rd day after Switch on
then 1 week after switch on
then 1 month after switch on
then 3 months after SO
then 6 months after SO
then yearly.

This is South of england Cochlear Implant centre.

Since I was part of the clinical trials for Freedom, I had mappings every 2-3 weeks until the trial was over (several months) then after that once a year.

That schedule is similar to mine, the first year is pretty often, thereafter, I only go twice yearly so far, but keep in mind everyone has different requirements. Some go more often than others, but the above schedule is the average.

Mappings? Is that for Cochlear implant? I never hear of mappings before. That's interesting. I am learning. :)

Mapping is basically tweaking the programming. Some people prefer the high frequencies to be louder, lower or whatever. Some wants to try different strategies, such as Whisper, Beam, Music, ADRO, whatever. (This is Freedom words...not AB)

Vivie - some people are anal about specific sounds, others doesn't seem to care (I know one of my friends don't. She just got the CI specifcially for music, and only went for a couple mappings then stopped. She refuse to try anything else but 30 DR. That's it. NO other strategy...which I find pathetic). I went for my left - 4 or map sessions within 5 months. My right - not yet...I still have a crude map. Will get a good map once I get to Vegas (TOMORROW!!).

Some takes 10 times within 6 months. Others, less. Usually you can tell if you need a new map or tweaking when you find some annoyances in sounds, or some sounds that you heard before, but is missing. SkullChick heard fire alarms at first (which she never heard before), then over time, she couldn't hear it anymore. That's how she knew she needed a new map.

Forgot to add: Always allow yourself TIME to adjust to the new map. The new map may sound slightly weird or off...but don't change it every week otherwise your brain will be confused, then the process will be harder. I hated ADRO for the first 4 months on my left. I had it taken off. However, I'm willing to go back and try it again now that I'm more experienced.

I understand that clear. Wow! That's interesting. It's different CI & HA between. I am wearing hearing aids since I was 2. I am plan to get a CI in future. I has a good ears in 90 percent. I haven't get any hearing loss over 100 yet. I am still same 90db since I was born. I want to see the new technology & fashion for CI color and size next decade. I don't want to be big BTE cause it goes off. LoL

Yeah - every 6 months from the beginning is not good. The brain goes through a very steep learning curve for the first 12 weeks after activation and beyond and the mappings need to be frequent enough to keep up with that... I didn't go to 6 months intervals until about a year past my activation.

right after my activation, I went back for mapping 1 week, 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, and 5 months. I am expected to return in November for tune-up/mapping.

Ok guys thanks so much for your input  will go to my audie for a new mapping then...
