EASTPORT, N.Y. (WABC) -- Police said a Long Island man set his rental car ablaze while trying to kill bedbugs inside the vehicle.

Scott Kemery suffered first- and second-degree burns in the incident Tuesday afternoon outside an Eastport King Kullen.

Police say the Bridgehampton resident poured alcohol over the insects, then sat in the car and lit a cigarette, setting off the blaze.

He fled the vehicle on his own. A line of cars went up in flames in the Long Island parking lot.

Detective Sgt. Edward Fitzgerald told Newsday that someone told Kemery that if he saturated the bedbugs with alcohol it would kill them.

Police say two other cars were heavily damaged from the intense heat of the fire.

This said nothing about setting it on fire too! Thank goodness no one else was hurt. He should get the Darwin award.

never heard of Darwins idiot list. is it world idiots or just American ones bc I can think long list uk ones:)

selfish man did he not think bed bugs be in clothes hiding everywhere...For sake of getting bed bug killer people this cost him more

I am not sure if it's world-wide. But yeah, idiots is the perfect way to describe Darwin candidates.

his brains in his backside somewhere if he got brain that is.....What frighting people could been in the other cars he lucky not on murder wrap
 
Some people go nuts about Bed Bugs...a phobia over insects. He took it to the extreme....Some have winded up in mental hospitals over them....The thought of an insect feeding off your body isn't pleasant....So guessing he wasn't in the right state of mind here....
 
Seriously? Who does not know lighting up in the presence of fumes will ignite the combustible liquid? :roll:
 
Maybe it was really an attempted suicide who changed his mind at the last minute.

I thought of this too, I see elderly people or kids or pets waiting in the car at parking lots all the time. And some time the person is not able to get out of the car on their own .
