This year has been filled with its share of sudden and surprising divorces in the entertainment and political world, but this split may take the cake.

A 99-year-old Italian man filed for divorce from his 96-year-old wife of 77 years after he found letters from an affair she had 60 years ago.

The man, identified in court papers as Antonio C., discovered the letters exchanged between his wife and a former flame in an old chest of drawers days before Christmas, according to the Telegraph. He confronted his wife, Rosa C., who reportedly admitted to the affair, and tried to convince him to stick with their marriage.

But despite the nearly eight decades that they spent building a life together, a scorned Antonio C., moved ahead with the divorce. (Guess he never heard of "let bygones be bygones.") The letters were the latest woes in the couple's long marriage during which they had five kids, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild together, according to UPI.

Originally from Sardinia, Antonio C. reportedly met Rosa C. in the 1930s while he served as part of the Italian Carabinieri in her native Naples. The Italian press pointed to the couple's southern blood as the catalyst for the breakup, the Telegraph noted.

Once Antonio and Rosa C.'s divorce is finalized, they will become the oldest divorcees, according to the Telegraph, taking the title from fellow Brits Bertie and Jessie Wood, both aged 98, who called it quits in 2009 after 36 years of marriage.

Amazing knowing about a 60 year affair and debating on when to divorce?
Right-slow thinker-to say the least!
 
On second thought-won't have to pay ongoing support for a long time!
 
Maybe they'll get back together? They should hurry because they don't have much time.

Wonder if the guy the wife had an affair with is still alive? The fact that the wife still has his letters shows an attachment. A soap opera at the retirement community, huh?

Could be...the wife is 66...the hubby 99 !...Wonder if the hubby ever tried Viagra?..All in all, there's over 20 years age difference between them....

Some "66'ers" are still "Rocking & a-Rollin' "ya know?....(don't look at me, Sally!...I'm not 66 yet...)

I think their reaction is overrated, sadly but there will be only 2 winners. That is, the court and attorney. The rest, just loser and that guy that declare divorce is double loser. What guy got to gain after divorce? I don't see much.

If that guy were smarter than he is, he would have let it go nicely but paid a visit to a attorney and write up new will and last testament, leaving nothing to wife.
 
This guy has 99 problems, but a woman ain't one.
 
Well, the wife cheated back in 1944. I wouldn't be surprised if she cheated more than once with different guy(s).

I don't know any thing about life insurance, but I am thinking that if husband dies, wife gets life insurance money. I don't think he wants wife to get life insurance $$$$.

Either way, wow!!!! Had he lived to 95, he would have never found that wife cheated on him. Guess old age isn't as golden as thought.......
 
Oh well, his loss as he will now have to give a portion of his retirement to her in support. If he was smart he should have just put the letters back as they were. Then, go down to a lawyer and have have a final will and testament written out, leaving the wife absolutely pennyless with one letter in a lockbox she has access to upon death stating he found out about the affair and was leaving her with nothing for it. That's the best revenge he could get.

Well, that lil machination wouldn't fly in California and who knows in how many other states. California is a community property State....a no-fault State.
 
But that was a long time ago. Most often when someone had a relationship, but wanted to keep in touch by writing letters to each other. Usually, it was always someone who was single, not married. Beside, they kept the love letters in the shoe box or a box to keep for to remember by. Beside, if the husband had a problem with his wife years ago during the 1930 and 1940 which let her to have an affair with the other man. I am sure he might have an affair with other woman(women), too. He might have cover up not revealing about his past. But he is a man and he thought that if he can have an affair, but not the woman like his wife. Then that is not equal to each other. He is not an angel. :roll:
