My female friend's white MacBook was stolen at her condo last night. She need it badly. I hope her to find receipt and serial number. Should go to Apple store soon. Can they able to be MAC tracking to find it?

File a police report just in case. If your friend used Amex Gold/Platinum to purchase the Macbook, they may replace it for free.

How many times can they do that? So I am not so sure about that. :(

I thought there was a way to remotely turn off the stolen item? Doesn't your friend have a desktop Mac?

You can find it via iCloud's app, "Find My iPhone". You can lock it or erase the hard drive through the app too as well. It will tell you where your MacBook is located.

However, you must have an account on your computer in order to do that.

Chevy---see what Banjo said to me. So......do you know??

My guess is she doesn't have one. So she's pretty much screwed. The only two options she has is to get the serial number and let Apple know about it. If somebody brings the MacBook Pro in, they can check the serial number since it would be flagged. The other option is to give the serial number to the police and there is a good chance it'll never be recovered.

Looks grim, yeah....btw, would all Apple stores be alerted and then they watch for it coming in? Is this voluntary or does the law require this vigilance when reported? Something I never really gave much thought to.....

From what I know, if you give your serial number to Apple, they will send it to all of their Apple stores and affiliates. If a product come in with a matching serial number, it will be flagged and the owner will be notified.

How about using the App store? Don't they know which computer or iPhone it is?

She still have OS X Leopard now.

She found its macbook's serial number. I had told her to send it to police report. They will search for it on craigslist or swap shop.

Find My iPhone/Find My Mac must be set up before you lose your phone/computer via iCloud. Sadly this feature is not enabled by default.

When I get my iPhone 4S in a few months, the very first thing I plan to do is set this up.

My friend left his Mac in a Costco shopping cart. They're both silvery grey and he was in a hurry.. Loaded up his car and left.. By the time he realized his mistake, it was way too late! We tried to call Costco to see if anybody turned it in but no such luck.

A while ago, someone stole my iphone. I texted that person and told them that I have an app that takes a picture and copies their fingerprint. Not true, but they believed it! I said if they met me within 10 minutes, I wouldn't turn them in to the police. After that, I downloaded an app called "My Folder" If someone clicks it and tries to guess the password (will be wrong) it will take a picture of the person and send it to me. I check it once in a while and will catch my friends nosing around my iphone! Bad, bad friends...:giggle:
