I know I am lazy to search for old thread. I have a several questions to ask..

I plan to purchase a macbook pro laptop sometime this year hopefully. I already decide what I configure my future laptop, but I need to comprehend the difference between HDD and SDD. I basically know HDD is cheaper, but making some noises. SSD is expensive due to durality. But I read something else about SSD issues.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2764056?start=0&tstart=0

It caught my attention...if macbook pro hit by firmwire bugs, then it will overwrite the data (speaking of SSD). It raised my concerns. I still am undecided on HDD or SSD.

Your comments are welcome!

I upgraded a Crucial 64 GB SSD. I downloaded new firmware for improve speedy. I have no problem with my SSD. My WEI score was 5.9 from HDD to 7.6 from SSD.

Yes, expensive pricey of SSD....but, I'm loving with it. If you plan to buy SSD. I suggest you use a guide for SSD. http://thessdreview.com/ssd-guides/optimization-guides/the-ssd-optimization-guide-2/ for reduce overload SSD, saving space, no more click cleaning trash icon, adjust performance power as saving power, etc.... BUT, sorry that link for Windows OS only.

May I see the link that you saw the link about firmware bugs? It's all depend what manufacturer of SSD. Crucial is best one ever. Macbook is rare bugs with firmware unlike PC. ALWAYS read reviews FIRST before update firmware.

I remembered faulty firmware from Seagate that it almost kill HDD and some of them may lost the DATA. There is no perfect. That's what backup data for.

Here a link about faulty firmware
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drives failing - The Inquirer

SSD is better than HDD for shockproof (SSD won't break after you drop it a lot but HDD will DONE after single or twice.

SSD is better than HDD for low power. Most 2.5" HDDs are around 2-10 watts, That's mean drain a macbook's battery life a little. SSD's watts is around 1 watts or less. Also HDD is little more warm than SSD. If high watts then little more warm from bottom of laptop that you will feels the warm or sometime hot.

Here a video about SSD vs HDD for performance.
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qpxab2osjKo]macbook air SSD vs. 2 macbook air HDD boot time - YouTube[/ame]

My wife's almost 5 years old Macbook Air 1.6Ghz with SSD and it's pretty FAST than my Macbook 2.2Ghz with HDD for boot up and open apps quick. She still use it today.

SSD is not recommend for movie edit and defragmentation. Don't worry OSX (Mac) don't really need defragmentation so much unlike Windows XP.

Any question?

Apple is planning to release a new, thinner 15-inch MacBook Pro by the end of April.

The new MacBook Pros are said to feature stronger CPU performance and larger storage capacity than their MacBook Air counterparts. Some even claimed that Apple will debut a new, thinner 15-inch MacBook Pro based on Intel’s latest Ivy Bridge Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs.

I like 512 SSD but it s too expensive. I hope that Macbook Pro includes dual SSD and HDD. Meaning SSD for flash and data and HDD for storage.

For laptop? I don't like that idea. Dual SSD and HDD give more weight and drain battery life.

For desktop? Sure No problem.

I see that SSD runs faster than HDD.

Hmm, What if I wanna make a movie some day? How can I make a movie even SSD is not recommended?

Forgive me for being dumb about GB part. I know HDD GB storage. What about SSD? 128, 256, or 512 GB is sufficient enough for data? What about storage?

Yeah! See to happen about new gen MacBook Pro 15 end of April and MacBook Pro 13 around June.

Yeah, I am weighing on purchasing a 2011 macbook pro model or 2012 macbook pro model. I have some concerns if any issues relating to a newer models.. look at the new ipad issues, for example.

I am confused about two different dates??? u mean 15 inches MB pro and 13 inches MB pro laptops?

Yeah, it makes sense to me. Dual SSD and HDD is No-No for laptops.

Yeah, I plan to replace my 11 year old PC with iMac later this year. Right now, I am focusing on purchasing a macbook pro laptop in the near future (I mean, soon).

You can use edit movie thru EHDD USB.

Newegg.com - Western Digital Elements SE 1TB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive

1Tb for EHDD USB 2.0 is $110. Pretty cheap? Let you know that Macbook have thunderbolt ready that it's pretty FAST than USB 2.0 and USB 3.0.

So that's mean you have to waiting for EHDD thunderbolt.

More info about thunderbolt.
Apple - Thunderbolt: Next-generation high-speed I/O technology.

128 GB is pretty good enough for you as pictures only. Use EHDD for movie only. What does you think of that? My Macbook is 120GB HDD and I have 50% space free left after five years with vmware fusion for Windows XP, Windows 7, and linux ubuntu.

You can put Windows 7 on your Macbook thru Vmware and you can use OSX and Windows at same time.
VMware Fusion: Run Windows on Mac for Desktop Virtualization

Can't afford $49.99 for Vmware Fusion then you can use Boot camp for free but you have to reboot up and pick Window OR OSX.

Apple - Support - Boot Camp

Hmm... Thunderbolt costs between $1149-2499! :-o

Also, Parallel is another software that can switch from OSX to Windows XP, 7, etc..

I tried Parallel before and I hate it so much. It's pretty drain my RAM down a lot for my Macbook. My old coworker IT had same problem with Parallel for his PC due high stress for his CPU. So we switched to Vmware fusion and we loved it so much.

You can try Parallel and vmware fusion as trial for 30 days.

Yeah, I know the thunderbolt is very expensive because it's new technology and price will drop in the future for sure.

LaCie is very popular brand for IT user and edit movie.

Compatible with Apple Time Machine???

WD My passport 1TB for and Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB for Mac support to compatible with Apple Time Machine.

Apple Time Machine can works ANY brand of EHDD. Oh yeah. If not work then just format EHDD to HFS+ and it was not hard to do it.

Hmm, thanks for your input. I think I will try Vmware fusion and LaCie later when I get my first macbook pro laptop.

I have a last question for you, Highlander..

Suppose if I use video chat such as Skype, VRS, etc, does that affect SSD?

Thanks!

As you don't recorder them. They just short load from SSD then use RAM as streaming only. Yes, you are fine with them.
