Hi.

I live in Sydney, Australia and have obtained my Esprit 3G through the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre. It's been so incredibly beneficial to my life - except as of yesterday when I... misplaced it. On the Thursday night, I had (much) more to drink at the pub on an empty stomach than I would have liked - celebrating no work on the Friday! I have an incredibly vague memory of walking home that night. Suffice to say, that I woke up the next afternoon and couldn't find my speech processor. I can only conclude that I lost it some time after leaving the pub and before getting home. I've gone everywhere I can think of, retracing my steps and asking around with no luck. I'm effectively completely deaf again, until I somehow obtain a new one.

Just how much would it set me back in purchasing a replacement? The speech processor itself wasn't insured but I'm covered fully on Medicare, however. I'm not exactly loaded with money right now, already having plenty of necessary expenses I need to spend my hard earned cash on. Any suggestions at all would be welcome.

In your reply, you have my permission to laugh at my misfortune and stupidity - but please provide a little help also!

Incidentally, how often does this happen to people anyway? This is the first (and only) time it's ever happened to me.

I did and the response was a negative. I'm positive I was wearing it when leaving the pub. The most likely place would have been on the way home. It's not there, I've walked back and forth between the pub and my house three times and not found it. It did rain overnight and on the Friday morning, so it's entirely possible the processor met its' end down a storm drain.

Then I guess it's... gone. *sobbing*

I once lost my hearing aid while walking a quarter mile from one place to another. It rained overnight and I found it in the parking lot. Amazingly, it still worked.

Have you talked to the person you got the CI from?

No, I haven't yet. In Australia, it's the Easter long weekend, meaning Friday and Mondays are public holidays. Won't be able to get in contact with the SCIC until Tuesday, unfortunately. It's a matter of waiting, huh?

Put flyers in that area on poles asking anyone if they have found it to contact you?

Hi Tensho,

Welcome. I'm from Sydney too and have heard of the SCIC, although I didn't get my CIs through there.

Sorry to hear about you losing your speech processor. Have you tried enquiring with the police station in the area? Sometimes people will hand in valuable property there. I would also contact SCIC to see if perhaps they can give you a loaner to keep you going. They might have some spare processors lying around or locate some somewhere else that they will sell cheaply to you or donate from the people who upgraded to the Freedom? They will also advise you about where you stand with medicare coverage for a replacement.

Also (a matter for the future) you can get insurance to cover future losses. There is one broker who has a daughter with a CI and he has devised a policy especially for CI users and backed by a major insurance company.
