Hi everyone, AD-ers!

At present, I have a feeling that the world deaf culture (whether european-wide, national-wide or world-wide) is in a so-called crisis.
It is an assumption and an observation of me.

Therefore, I have a question to you:

DOES THE DEAF CULTURE HAVE THE FUTURE?
(the Deaf culture of tomorrow is on the search.)

Thus, let us begin with the posting! All opinions are welcome!

Perhaps it may look bleak, grim to some as far as to what the future holds for the Deaf culture, despite all the technical advances and what marvels that will be invented, created in the future...bottom line, this culture will live on...why? Take a hearing-aid off, turn off the C.I., etc., and yet, still Deaf. ;)

However, this culture as I see it from my perspectives isn't in any sort of crisis, although, it might be somewhere else, another location or even at another country. But when a certain group of folks lashes out to a certain culture when things could serve better by building a bridge and all stand together on common ground as a community, function, group...etc.,....

All cultures go through adaptive change. It is an ongoing process. That is what is ocurring in the Deaf Culture now. There are changes and adaptions occurring as a result of technological changes within the larger society that have a direct impact on Deaf Culture. Will it cause the destruction of the Deaf Culture? No. It will simply adapt to the necessary change the way it always has and continue to thrive.

I agree with RR about building a bridge. It means that parents of children with CI will need to expose their children to sign language and the deaf community and the people in the deaf community need to accept and not criticize the parents for implanting their children. If the parents say their deaf child doesnt need other deaf people nor sign language or if the members of the deaf community continue to bash on people for getting CIs, then there will be a gap.

I think the more technology allows the deaf to be less isolated from hearing culture, there's going to be some big changes. But there will always be some commonality of experience unless deafness is completely ended--and I imagine that is some time away. Deaf culture will be around for some time to come--it will just grow in some different directions. I don't think it's a bad thing.
