Hello,

My name is Ann and I'm hearing. I'm also an anthropology major and I'm very interested in the human experience and different cultures. My boyfriend is a CODA, both parents are Deaf and so is his younger sister. Because of my interactions with his family over the past few years I have become very interested in Deaf culture. I'm in my senior year at college and this semester I was presented with the opportunity to do a research paper on whatever topic I want. I have chosen to write about the affects of CI/HA on Deaf culture and the overall debate going on between both sides. I'm not looking to start a debate on this site since I'm sure that's been posted a million times. All I'm looking for is books, magazines, online articles, movies etc that will provide me with information to both sides. I'm currently reading Rebuilt by Michael Crost as well as Open Your Eyes; Deaf Studies Talking. If anyone can provide me with more information I would be very grateful!

Thanks for your time.

Welcome..
"Rebuild" is a great read.. Very informative. The other side of the spectrum is given by authors like Harlan Lane as you very likely already found out.
I have started a thread some time (years) ago regarding books about Deafness & CI. There is a lot of information there, but its some time ago.
I have some newer articles regarding CI and Deaf community which I found Googleing the subject. I'm sure you will be able to find them as well..
I do have some book written by a mother of (deaf) twins..
Also, I started a thread regarding Deaf parents of Deaf children where the parents made the choice for CI for their kids.
I can post the links here if you want. (The thread was removed from this message-board... Wonder why..)

Hope you find what you need here..

They have tons of debates on here and I'm sure a lot of resourceful information have been posted already. Keep looking. You'll find what you need. Good luck.

Found the "literature" thread...
During the thread, more books were added to the list..

Have fun.

Thought it would be a good idea to gather books in this thread that people thought were really worth-while....
Make sure you add a publishing date because for CI-related books, 3-year old books are allready OLD!

I'll start off with the following list:

Books & films regarding deafness, deaf culture, history
* "Seeing Voices" by Oliver Sachs - 1990
* "Mask of Benevolence" by Harlan Lane - 1993 (The CI-part of the book is really out of date and really not valid any more.)
* "A Journey into the Deaf-World" by Harlan L. Lane, et al - 1996
* "When the mind Hears" by Harlan Lane - 1989
* "Everyone Here Spoke Sign Language: Hereditary Deafness in Martha's Vineyard" by Nora Groce - 1988
* "Sound and Fury" by Josh Aronson and Scott Davidson (Documentary)
* "Laurant Clerc: The Story of His Early Years" by Cathryn Carroll - 2002
* "Mr. Holland's Opus" Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation - 1996 (Film)
* "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" by Carson Cullers - April 2004
* "Children Of A Lesser God" Paramount Home Entertainment - 1986 (Film)

Books and films regarding CI
* "Rebuilt: How Becoming Part Computer Made Me More Human" by Michael Chorost - 2006
* "Wired for Sound: A Journey into Hearing" by Beverly Biderman - 1999
* "Sound and Fury" by Josh Aronson and Scott Davidson (Documentary)
* "Cecilia's Story Introduction" and "Hearing Your Life " available from by Advance Bionics (Documentary)
* "Jacobs journey" available from Cochlear (Documentary)

This for now... more to come

You need research. I'm not aware of actual research sources here. Speak to your friendly librarian (they're great!). There are threads here that you can read to find out about the issues. Your stated topic is very broad. It would help if you narrow your topic by writing a good topic sentence. That will give you direction. Seriously, the librarian is your friend.

Cloggy, that's the info I was referring to-- studies reported in a peer reviewed journal. Professors are looking for those kind of cites. Be sure to research the subsequent history of all sources so that you get the most recent, accurate sources. :)

I will, if I would be referring to them. But in this case it's just providing the information to Anthronerd.
When she uses it, I'm sure she will refer to the info in the proper way.
(One of the articles states that it may not be referred to..)

Yea, that was intended for the OP. Can you tell that I'm a teacher by training? ;-)

I'll mention that to my teen. Does it work for humanties and science? Don't you wish that everyone would get together and agree on one system?

Yeh.. then again.. Endnote covers many systems... and after the information is in, you can choose in what format/system it is coming out... Great tool...
