Hi everyone, my name is Tim. I was wondering if anyone has advice on working as an non certified interpreter. I'm not some guy that picked up an ASL book. I grew up with a deaf cousin, who is more like a brother. I have a lot of personal friends that are deaf or hoh. I'm currently in school for software programming, and I feel that God is telling me to change my path. I would love to be able to test it out and if its the right choice I will know that becoming certified will only make it better.

thanks in advance for any input.

My advice - get certified first.

I don't think passing yourself off as an interpreter, if you've not completed a certification would be wise. Take some classes, talk to some local interpreters, and make an informed decision.

Fluent signing doesn't guarantee an ability to interpret. There are many people who are fluent signers, even CODA's, but would make terrible interpreters.

You need to attend an ITP in order to acquire the interpreting skill set. Find an ITP department head and request an interview and skill assessment.
