Hey all.. I live in the province of Ontario, Canada.

Throughout my entire life - I've always bought my hearing aids through Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) which is a non-profit organization that serves mainly the deaf and hard of hearing.

I've been without a hearing aid for about 7 months as I can't afford to buy a new hearing aid and now have to wait for another 8 months before I can buy a new hearing aid so that my health care plan will cover the majority of the cost.

Last week, I learned about a company called "Listen Up Canada!" - website: Hearing Aids Toronto Impaired Hearing Loss Test Screening Rehabilitation Services

and I see that the have a promo that you can buy a hearing aid for $300! I hope that means any hearing aid because I need the most powerful hearing aid as possible due to having a profound hearing loss.

What I want to ask is - Is Listen Up Canada a good company? Are they legit? I find it hard to believe that a for profit company can sell hearing aids cheaper than a non-profit organization like CHS.

thanks

hey crackerjack! I live in ottawa and we have listen up canada as well. I have heard commercials but they are more of a dispenser type of place. Hold on i will call for you! Ok so i called and the promo is for only ONE type of hearing aid by bernafon i couldn't understand what she had said the name was but i looked on the website and nothing she said really matches what was online...so my guess is that it's discontinued and that's why they are selling it at a cheaper price. I asked if it's high powered and she was like ummmmm...hold on. And then she came bak and said it depends on what the hearing loss of the person is..i wanted to call her a liar cuz not any ha can be just put at 10 dB or 50dB there are limits damn it..lol..

SOo...would i go to listen up canada probably not...BUT i have another solution for you...Have you ever heard of Ontario Assistive Devices Program?..I didn't until i was searching like mad about hearing aids and assistance etc. but here is the link. ADP

here is the specific one on ha's Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Information - Public Information - Assistive Devices - Publications - Hearing Aids - Adults

I used ADP in conjunction with my insurance as well to pay for my ha AND fm system i think i only ended up paying 300 dollars for my ha and nothing for my fm system since my school covered the rest of the portion theat ADP did not cover :)
Hope this helps!!!

Hey lilitalia89,

thanks for your reply - I live in Ottawa as well.. what you wrote helps. I think I have no choice but to give Listen Up a try as I don't want to wait for another eight months before I can get a new hearing aid through CHS.

About what the Listen Up rep saying how powerful the HA is depends on the person's hearing loss - that's a lot of BS.

I'm aware of the ADP program - thanks for mentioning it.. but I thought they only cover up to $500 per HA - if so.. I would have to fork over how much more? $500 for one HA? I have a health care plan at work and the insurance will pay almost the rest of the cost - but in order for the insurance to pay - have to wait for eight months.

Again thanks
Sean

RUN! RUN FAST! I went a ListenUP! Clinic once and it was so not even worth the hour of my time. They did the most incomplete audiogram and tried to sell me open-fit aids (which I so do not qualify for now, nor did I then) and I knew this and left right away.

I am in Toronto so maybe Ottawa is different in terms of service. However I know they have strange maintenance plans (that you pay for yearly) and all kinds of corporate stuff. Wait and deal with CHS, or someone else who knows what they are talking about. I have never used the audiology services at CHS but I have used other services there and have always been pleased.

see if lions club or knights of columbus can donate u ha's til ur insurance can kick in and then donate them bak?

I know it is hard to get an hearing aid when you need it for sounds or noise sound. I never go to Listen up, Canada! or CHS for an hearing aids. I usually went to the audiologist and explain what I want to get an hearing aid. He also mentioned that I need to get some plan to buy the hearing aid because my Health Card don't cover the hearing aid and that goes with my eyeglasses too which both of them I could not afford to buy. So they find a plan for me to buy around it and I get them both hearing aids and eyeglasses. You just have to ask the audiologist to talk about that and see if they can help you or better yet, just go to your doctor and explain that you want to get an hearing aids and how to get around getting the hearing aids. My doctor help me and it work. As for the hearing aid batteries, I buy them at the Pharmacy and they have hearing aid batteries there instead having to travel all the way from my hometown to Sudbury, Ontario. I am aware of the hearing aid batteries at the CHS but I need to buy closer to my home so I only drive to the Pharmacy ten kilometers to buy them. No problem there.

Bebonang has a point. Many of the chains, like ListenUP! Canada have financing optons so you can have a payment plan. Look into that...just not with ListenUP! Canada lol
