I need some help learning asl. I live in a small community that doesn't have any resources for me. Any help would be great! I have only lost my hearing suddenly 3 months ago.

I need some help learning asl. I live in a small community that doesn't have any resources for me. Any help would be great! I have only lost my hearing suddenly 3 months ago.

1. Could you name your city in Maine?
2. You need to figure out why you lost your hearing. Could it be otosclerosis? In this case, the hearing can be returned without implants and hearing aids. Google about stapedoplasty.
3. Look for the ASL classes at local community colleges and adult schools. I had made a lot of attempts to learn it earlier just attending the Deaf socials, but this won't help much.
Class with Deaf teacher is the best way to get basics of sign. I learned a lot and most importantly retained much more in 2 months of the class, than just randomly attending the Deaf events.

Make sure that it has DVDs, otherwise it is useless. Some of the used books are sold without videos.

Is also very helpful in learning Deaf culture. I recommend reading it too.


Haphazard learning can only demotivate you, because ASL is not easy. Attending the Deaf events without basics of signs will be an isolating experience. A lot of Deaf people are nice, but they want to socialize with each other too, not to babysit and teach you. They will appreciate you more, if you make preliminary preparations, learn about their culture, and learn basics of sign.
