I'm not sure which correct forum this should be in, but if you feel this is in the wrong place, please feel free to move it to the correct place :)

Anyways, I was in a lecture this morning and the topic was NESB (non-English speaking background) students.

I had a thought about Deaf/hearing impaired students learning another language as a part of LOTE (language other than English) in schools...

I was wondering if any of you had the opportunity to learn another language whilst at school?

I know for most of us here, our first language is sign language (ASL, Auslan, etc - depending which country you are from), and English is our second language BUT the sign language we are fluent in is a form of English - visually - if you know what I mean :)

I don't know of any Deaf students being given the option to learn another language (written, as learning another language orally would be difficult for Deaf students - I think?) whilst being in school.

Personally, I'd have loved being able to get involved in LOTE lessons at schools - all schools I went to never gave me the option to participate in LOTE lessons, which I thought was unfair.

Looking forward to reading your responses :)

I have learnt Japanese 8 years ago, but today, I'm hopeless.

Did you learn Japanese at school?

If so, how were you taught?

Yes, I was taught at school when I was in Year 7 - I was the only deaf student in LOTE department of that school, lol. How I was taught, I was taught with a normal japanese teacher, and with an full time interpreter, really.

Wow. You were lucky to be able to learn another language in a primary school setting. I wasn't given the option to learn another language at school.

When I was in Grade 5, and it was the year level where we would finally be allowed to learn another language, and I wanted to participate (my old school had Japanese as their LOTE), but the teachers would not allow me cause they gave me some excuse like it would be difficult for me to learn another language - yeah right... Stupid bunch of asshats. LOL.

It was in Year 8 only that I learned French as it was supposed to be an easier language to learn than German, the only 2 choices at that time in the year of 1968. I passed the exam ok as I had to do it alone as I was the only oral deaf in High school. I had to do it alone, no interpreter. It was fun at first learning a different language but the novelty worn off, luckily it was only for a year.

Right now, my hearing niece who is in Year 8 is learning Auslan as a language subject. Good on her! (But I don't sign, only a few basics) :)

Yeah, i have to learning another language.. i can only german and german sign lauguage(DGS).. but i´m not enough in my english, in school is duty for all have to learning english.. oh well.. beauty days! ^^

Down here, Year 7 is in the secondary School Level - I know it is different from Queensland's system :)

Ohh sorry about your teacher.. Well I went for two terms, but drop out because of the funds so I guess I have to wait later when I have more opporiunity to get the money for school.

All I still remember is Konnichiwa, onamewa? - "Hello, What your name?"

a little backwards on the topic, but...
when i was attending the ASL classes at nmsd, there was a non english speaking family attending our classes. so when we learned a new sign, we learned it in both english and spanish. that way we learned not only ASL, but i brushed up on my atrocious spanish skills, and the family learned english rather quickly. kind of a cool deal, i thought.

Yupp I understand what it sad right before I read the English. Curious if you understand this, "boku wa baka da ka?":giggle:

I didn't take a foreign language class while in high school; I was waived from the foreign language requirement.

I'm trying to learn some French now, though.

I had french lessons in the secondary school but I remember very little

and when I went to university , I learned english mostly by myself from books

I was waived too cuz the educators felt that they would be too hard for me. I wish they had given me a chance cuz i would have loved to learn Spanish! It would definitely be useful with the Spanish-speaking population growing here in USA.
