CBS expected to issue statement before Thursday's show airs

David Letterman announced his plan to retire in 2015 during a taping of "The Late Show" on Thursday afternoon.

CBS is expected to issue a statement sometime before the program is broadcast Thursday night.

Last year, Letterman signed a contract with CBS through 2015.

He debuted his late-night show on NBC on Feb. 1, 1982, making comical top 10 lists and "stupid pet tricks" part of pop culture.

He moved to CBS and "The Late Show with David Letterman" on Aug. 30, 1993.

Let Conan take over Letterman... I personally like Jay Leno the best, Conan is alright but he is annoying sometimes when he poke fun of people.

It is about time he is going to retire. I've found his show to be tasteless, but that's just me.

I did not care for Conan , he did not last long on the Tonight Show.
Ellen DeGeneres doesn't poke fun at people a lot too. I think Jay Leno is the best too.

Bring back Johnny! Surely he has a kid out there somewhere to carry on the greatness. Channel Dad and carry us through the strange times ahead.
I would even start watching tv again for that.

As for Conan...even Arseino Hall...never cared for these 2....how about Cedric the Entertainer?....He's pretty good in Millionaire....even Bill Clinton?....:giggle:

I remember Arsenio Hall was entertaining.

Robin Williams would be fantastic as a host . He is brilliance and his mind works very quick . I would love to see him be late night host.

I can't follow Robin Williams he talks super fast and CC does not keep up with him. He has a new sitcom this year, I tried to watch but it was too difficult.

Yes he does talk very fast but damn he is so funny. I have trouble following him too when he was as a guest on Jay Leno.
