I went to my tune up for my implant last week on thursday. everything was going good until my audilogist was getting worried. She was telling my dad who told me that She was worried that the coil in my implant inside of me would break, and that if i showed any signs which meant if i felt vibrations in my left cheek area, or if my left eye keeps twitching and not stopping, that means the coil has broke inside and i would need another surgery.

BBBBBUUUUUTTTTT....

She hasn't seen any of the signs yet from my implant inside of me. So that is a relief. And she said I would be okay. But if i felt any vibrations in my left upper cheek area on my face, i have to tell my parents immediatly. But Honestly, I don't want to have another surgery just to replace my implant. I have so much good stuff going on right now with band, my love life, and with school. and i don't want a 3 week recovery to heal from my surgery and then having to go to columbus to get turned on for my implant. It's just a pain cuz i been through it once.

But if this ever happens to you, what would you do to advoid all of this to you??

To be honest? I would go back and get it replaced with no question about it. The good outweighs the bad, so if my internal implant failed for whatever reason, I would definitely go through surgery again.

First - You haven't said when you got the implant. The company name doesn't matter.

Secondly - If you got it many years ago, you'll be surprised that almost majority of us bounce back within a couple DAYS. :) PLUS - the surgery will not take as long and probably not as painful because they ALREADY made the indentations in your skull to place the implant and the holes to feed the array. So the surgeons basically just have to cut a small incision, take out the old one, then place in the new one. Most likely will not take as long, as long as there's no complications with regards of scar tissues or any other issues that you may have had. If you got it years ago, they probably made a huge incision, while nowadays it's unnoticeable behind the ear, and sometimes no need to shave.

Thirdly - You'll be surprised how easy it is when you get activated and stuff. I was activated just a couple months after the first one. I knew the routine. I recovered from surgery within 30 minutes (compared to 2 hours the first surgery). I recovered a lot faster because I knew what worked and what didn't.

**hugs** Be positive and hope you do not need to go through surgery again.

IF it does fail, think about it...would you rather have no CI at all?

I had CI surgery in November and was in and out of the surgical complex in under 6 hours, start to finish. The "cocktail" I was given was awesome and I woke up alert and fine, no grogginess. As a matter of fact, from wake up to out the door was about a half hour. I was fine all the way home and though sleepy for a while, had no other side affects. Perhaps, if the need arises, you can have the surgery done during a break from school and you could be up and active in just a few days, as I was. Of course, best case scenario is that there is no break down in your implant, as you have said the things to look for haven't happened. Maybe they won't?

There's nothing you can to avoid it from breaking!! Just have the reimplantation straight away when it breaks...

Music is your life....... you need your implant!!! it doesn't matter how long it would take to recover at least you will have sounds back at the end of it.

Did you have X ray (perhaps they could identify what sort of problem)

I would suggest you get it taken care of whenever possible because if you shrug it off, it will get worse in the future. :(

Oh Sweetie.. I completely understand!! We just found out that our son has to be re-implanted and it couldn't have come at a worse time- with sports and all. So we left the decision up to him and told him if he wanted to use only the one implant, we would understand and respect that decision. But he said no, he would rather have it done and over with and he's scheduled for surgery this Wednesday March 4th. I've also heard that some clinics are able to turn on the device the very next day! Take care of it!

That's about right...

Also, how annoying would those bad effects have on you? Would it hurt? Would there be only some weird feeling in your cheek? I guess you wouldn't want to stay that way for the rest of your life, so you'd eventually have to do this :D

Of course missing school, your band and friends is normal.

I'm sure if you have to go through surgery again, you'll recover faster than the first time and before you know it, it's already all over and done with :cool2:

Always look on the bright side of life is my prorogative :laugh2:

Did your audi give a reason of why she thought your implant was going to break inside? How long have you had it?

I was implanted in 2002 or in 2004. So I can't really remember what year. But I was implanted sometimes in the spring i think. I was about 9 years old when I was implanted. I'm 15 now, but will be 16 this year in august. About the reason why she thought my implant was going to break...A few weeks before my tune up, I had a hard time hearing thru both ears. I thought it would be from marching band or winter drumline. I had a lot of "huhs" and "what did you say?" when people try and talk to me. So, When my dad took me to columbus for my tune up, My implant was off at the time with those special thingys to program it from the computer, and I don't know where she got it from. But My audilogist was a little worried. But I didn't have any effects on me and she said i was fine. But When we were done, we walked back to the car (me and my dad) I got really scared and kind of started being teary-eyed. becuase I do not want to go thru surgery again. Because I don't want to miss band, school, etc. I still dont feel any side effects yet. But I'm worried still. Even though I'm fine right now I still feel scared. I don't want anything to be worse inside. So I had my implant for about 6 years.

Iv had my processor 8 years and am struggling to hear much at the moment.
Everything sounds so quiet at the moment

I had the same thing that you're having right now. I decided to turn my implant up a little bit louder for band and for home. Especially for band. Because Band is so loud all the time I usually have a hard time understanding people. So With my implant tuned up and is louder It sounds better. My dad quote: "Thank god we took you for that tune up today, you REALLY needed it."

And of course i agreed with him. My implants hurts a little bit right now, I took some medicine for it a few minutes ago. It's probably the weather. I'm having allergies right now so thats probably causing it to hurt too.

I'v changed the microphone cover so ill try again tomorrow, if its still the same im going to ask my mum if she can make me an appointment but back in october i went for ma yearly testing and when they turned it up i experienced eye twitching so they left it as it was before. with my implant i cannot adjust the volume because the audi knows if i did have a volume control i would have it on max volume because that's just the way i am

I havent experienced any eye twiching or any vibrations in my cheek yet. But I'm hoping that will NOT happen. Even though It might someday but I just pray to god that it wouldn't happen. I'm also a Freedom Nucleus user. I love my implant because I can tell the difference that Cochlear had made with all the other cochlear inplants that they have made. I haven't played around with the volume on my implant. I just left it be so i can get used to it. Because I was so used to loud noises I want to try and get used to the softer sounds because I like listening to loud stuff. So thats my goal for right now.
