It depends on which site is providing the service. I got my first email account almost 9 years ago. I got it when I was 7 (I don't think there were any age limits at the time) because my cousin in Nova Scotia wanted to talk to me via MSN. As far as I know, there is an age limit on Hotmail, but you'd have to find out how old he/she would need to be. I'm not sure about Yahoo or Gmail.

My daughter has a gmail acct..we have access to it.

The only reason my son who's 14 has his own email account was to set up his Xbox 360 live, he doesn't rarely use his email account though, but he does have access to the computer under parental control. I do monitor my son's activity. It is just to keep him safe and he's aware of it.

My 9 years old has no internet access at all.

It depends on the e-mail service. Of course, there are ways around it if they lie about their age.

That's why it's recommended that the parents set it up for their kids through their ISP (internet service provider). For instance, if your ISP is AOL... give your kid an e-mail for AOL. If it's for Comcast or Roadrunner, give them one through those.

That way, the parents can easily monitor those e-mails if necessary. :)

after watching so many shows, and "how to catch a predator" I'm never ever going to let my kid access the internet let alone have an email account til they're 19!

on a serious note, I would say depending on the kid themself with parental supervision.

Don't let kids get own email until he or she is 12 years old, still have limited access until child is 16 or 18 years old and mature if you trust your guts.

My niece got her first email at age 10. My brother allowed her. Because she is mature at home and school. But he still have her password to protect her from strange. He have to watch her emails and internet what she is doing. He set the parental control on her email and internet. He is not allow her go to chatroom or facebook yet.

My friends let her kids joined to facebook and myspace both. But they have to watch what kids are doing. They warned them about strange people that kids don't know who then don't confirm on request. They still have kids' passwords to protect them from virus, hacker, scammer on video and emails.

I don't know what I will do with my kids' grow up with facebook or myspace. My husband and I have to discuss about this. We have to build the trust our kids. My husband know how to set up the parental control for kids.

I was given my own AOL email address when I was 12/13 but never used it. I didnt use MSN till I was 14/15 yrs. I had be taught by my mother about the dangers of internet etc

I didn't get my own email until I was 19. That was the first time I even used the internet.

I had my first email address when I was only 11 years old... I'm not sure when I would let my son have his... i guess I'll have to see after he turns ten which is like 6 - 7 years in the future.

I never get email until I was 17. I begged my mom to buy me a new computer but my stepdad bought me Webtv. I hate Webtv! LoL

I never got email address until i left home for trip round the world at age of 22!!! I didn't have a clue about computers! Now i do!

However at school, the kids aged 8 to 19 have their own school email address (which we observe and have an access to it) They can use it outside school on their home computers although we have tight reins on it and they have access to website but it is very restricted.
