Has anyone stayed at the Kellogg Conference Hotel at Gallaudet University? I'm thinking of going to Washington for a few days and have been looking at travel options.

Here is what I'm looking to do.

1. Take the train in to Union, Station.

2. Take my Bike if possible.
Has anyone biked from here to major tourist exhibits, Smithsonian, etc?
What are the streets like?
How friendly is a bike commute?
How safe is the area?

3. If I don't take my Bike, how good/expensive is transportation to and around the city?

Any recommendations on things to see?

i went from smithsoian by train to outerlimit of city forget name of hotel cheap ticket and i did it by cab also.about $30 it was long time ago and if memory serves did not take long and it was a sunday..it was washington marathon the day i was there and i was jet lagged,i would say traffic same as any city not as bad as london paris or rome....i as told not far from White house it could be unfriendly..Smithsonian was very good,i saw the space stuff no time see much more than that..Washington got loads of things, read 'lonely planet'my brain bit hazzy

We used to park outside DC and take metro in as well. Many areas around WH you don't want to be at dark, but I felt safe at day time. A lot cheaper staying outside if you can. I can't remember if there are any stations further west than Fairfax on I66.

Don't know anything about the Kellogg Conference Center and although the Galluadet campus is very nice, its not in a great area. You usually can get rates under $100 at most hotels near Reagan Airport on the weekend and any hotel outside the city but near a Metro stop is usually a good bargain. The Metro is good but it stops running late at night. Washington also is one of those cities that has the bicycle share program where you can rent a bike at one place and drop it off anywhere in the city.

There are a lot of museums and most are free.
Good luck,
Rick

Has anyone stayed in the Capitol Hill or Eastern Market area? Is it a safe area?

Last time I lived in the row, from 1994 to 2001. That area was not that bad. I dont know about 2013.

I loved living that area though. I lived on 11 street and east capitol SE that right front of the lincoln park. That area is really nice.

east market near 4 and 5 st se have fruits, veggies, flowers and hoemmade artcrafts etc. god. i miss that. penn ave se is nice but i hope they got more restaurant than years ago. good luck!

There are a few Browstones by Eastern Market I'm consider renting for a week. I'm also looking at Logan Circle as well.

Has anyone done the Gallaudet tours? They only last an hour so I'm wondering if it is worth the trip?

Sara, the hotel does have a web site:

http://kelloggconferencehotel.com/index.php

I am currently in DC, but I did not choose this hotel. I choose the Donovan, but this hotel doesn't have any deaf amenities. It's not a bad hotel, but it lacks somme conviences like on floor ice machine, etc.. The roof top pool is nice though.

I think the Kellog hotel might be a better option if you know sign.. I still might visit Gally, not sure yet.

Hope this helps.

The Donovan has a web site.

If you are looking to save money, you can do much better at a hotel that has a fridge or at least an ice machine at no extra cost. And, get a place that has free internet. The city is full of cheaper places to get stuff like CVS where you can buy bottled water and snacks for when you go site seeing.
