One of my neighbors warned me to keep my rottweiler on leash. The city will give ticket if your pet is off leash. One other neighbor got tickets for not having her golden retrievers on leash. Police saw her walk her Golden retrievers without leash and ticketed her. Yes, all dogs have to be leashed per city ordiance.

One thing that is unfair is that I'm pretty sure many people won't complain if they see a golden retriever or a toy poodle off leash. However, that same person may complain if they see rottweiler off leash. It comes with territory of owning a rottweiler.

Luckily, I did not get a ticket yet for having my rottweiler off leash. I've came close.

Just be careful...........

People should keep their dogs on a leash when they are out in the public. No matter what breed they are, they should always be kept on a leash for everyone's safety and the dog's safety too as well.

They have enclosed dog parks where you can let your dogs run and play. However, you don't do that in public parks and on streets.

I agree. I never like seeing dogs off-leash on public sidewalks or open parks. It's for the safety of the dogs even more so than for the people.

True. The dog park gives dogs a safe area to run and socialization with other dogs. That makes for a happy, well-adjusted dog.

My city allow people to let their dogs run free at certain times of the day. We have 4 parks dogs are allowed to run but there is no enclosed space , so the dogs run wherever they feel like it! The owners have to keep their dogs away from the playground . I do not like allowing dogs off their leashes as some dog owners bring their dogs to parks that dos are NOT allowed to run because they think it OK. I took Marty to the woods and a woman had 6 dogs running lose while she was talking on her cell phone! One her 80 lbs dog kept knocking over Marty who is 17 lbs over ! I was trying to get the dog away from Marty and the owner did nothing until I got really mad!

well, Rottis, Bullies, Dobbies etc they do look threatening
and they do have this fierce reputation whereas other dogs don't,
so it's understandable that people react this way.

The truth is ANY dog have capacity to get aggressive and bite.

Best to for one's own peace and quiet to keep such your dog on leash and let off in designated areas.
I agree it is NOT fair, but Goldie and Poodle etc owners do get away with keeping off leash more often.
oh well, LIFE....

Little dogs should be on a leash and kept away from big dogs. Pick the little dog up if you need to. Dog parks have a separate small dog area for a reason. I've seen ignorant people try to bring small dogs into the large dog area with disasterous results. I haven't seen a dog injured but the poor little dogs are scared to death.

That said, some small dogs can hold their own with large dogs. It really depends on how the small dog was socialized. It's important for owners of small dogs to socialize them with larger dogs early. We had a papillion in puppy training class and she was great with all of the dogs.

i knowing it not matter which breed is dog, but one time i did saw man walk with pitbull is OFF LEASH. pitbull running to woman walk on side walk near street and attack her. lucky woman only getting bitten her hand and very little bleeding. man was able caught pitbull and grab his collar. i not mean that only pitbull need on leash but all breed need on leash. not matter big or small dog. it both safety reason both people and dogs. what if dog is escaping on street and gotten kill by car accident? what if dog running and hurt little kids outside?

I was keeping Marty away from the big dog , the woman was breaking the law as dogs where not allowed off their leashes after 10:00 AM ! I went to the woods around 11:00 AM to avoid running into any lose dogs. That woman is a dog walker and she is letting other people dogs run lose at the wrong time and she on cell phone ! I got Marty when he was 2 years old and have no idea how he trained before I got him.

South Carolina leash law requires a leash or similar device, or enclosure for dogs except when hunting with them.

I worry that some laws could be incredibly stupid in the future. I let my two dogs to roam around in the woods on some paths. There are other dogs with the owners of course. We did not have the problem yet. Sometimes, they growl each other, but they are just fine as long as they don't attack each other. It is almost like a dog greet. Knock the woods. Please, please don't complain to the town halls if there is any new problems. If you do, then you are screwed up with all of us as dog owners. We all know that it is our responsibility so far nothing happen which is good thing. I just wanted to let you know. That's all. Thanks!

I think everyone should keep their dogs on leashes no matter what. It doesn't matter how well behaved your dog is or whether or not you've not had any real problems before - there is a first time for everything, and when it happens it's never worth it. Stop taking such risks with your dog, there is no real benefit to having them off leash anyway.

The woman that had 6 dogs running loses was screwing it up for other dogs owners! She was breaking the law by letting the dogs run after 10:AM. I know a woman who small dog was bitten by a Great Dane in the same woods . The dog is lucky to be alive. The Great Dane was running loses , it owner just let it out of the house on it owns . You got it backward I am not screwing anything up if I report a person breaking the law. I did report it as I did not like having 3 dogs big dogs on my small at once. I when to the woods after 10 AM to avoid having that happen. I waited for dog owners to have the whole woods for their free running dogs , I have the rights to walk in the woods AFTER 10 AM with Marty on a leash and not have to worry about dogs running free.

What the HELL are you talking about!! My dog is never OFF his leash outside!!

I'm different from you guys. Probably, it is a different location where I live. I do understand your situation. Mostly, I agreed with you respectably.

I live in a nice town with surround the houses. It is a quiet park with a lot of trees and some paths. It is about 10 acres. There is a sign that says about the leash. I let my dogs to walk around without the leashes depending not too many people and cars. I have seen some people do that as long as we have few and friendly dogs there which is no problem. It depends on the dogs behave. That's about it.

My town has a dog park. But, the real problem is that the wood barks on the ground that contains chemicals. The town uses the round-up chemicals on the barks. Some of us don't agree with the town. It says to prevent the diseases on the barks from the dog poops. I don't want to complain about it. We all do pick up the dog poops right away as we use our common sense. The reason is that the sun kills the germs on the barks during the hot days. The pee contain ammonia that also kill the germs naturally as like a sterile as well. We use the household sprayers or liquid to clean up the kitchen or bathroom that contain ammonia. Ammonia is from a cow's pee. Many people do not realize that.

In fact, many town public workers (town employees) do not know anything and even they do not know the names of trees or grass or even weeds ... even worse they don't know what chemicals they are using to clean it up that possibly could harm their health because it is not against the law. Most of them only think about money and go home and drink a beer something like that. I wish that they should never use the round-ups. There are many alternative ways to clean it up for our environment. There are many names of trees that they need to know for example: Maple, Pine (3 needles, 5 needles, etc) , Dogwood, Elms, Beech, Locust, Mango, Mulberry, Oaks, Sagamore, etc. It is not really that hard for anyone to identity the trees. It is a good experience and education.

I am not the only one. My mother, my sisters, and our friends do that all the times.... for 20 years.

(My point about the round-up chemicals that should be eliminated so that the dogs would not get a cancer/tumor on the skin or their mouth from the wood barks. The dog park is a good place for them to walk around in the woods for their pleasure as we do ourselves pleasure, too.)

I do have 2 dogs and I keep then on leash all the times. No matter what the situation is or where they are going. Always on leash.

If I walk my dog around the local park at 6am, then he is off the lead. There is no one else around and he can go run and sniff whatever he wants.
He's a big playful, dopey Great Dane.

The park I walk him on is frequently used for kids' sports, I avoid taking him out when there is people using the park.

If I walk my Beast around to the shops or on the street, then yes, he's on a lead.

My dog has done the socialisation classes - he is friendly with other dogs and loves to play :)
