my name is katie and i'm deaf...or hard of hearing, whichever floats ur boat. i went undiagnosed until i was 11, pretty much because i was able to learn to read lips and really had no idea i was failing ever hearing test given to me by the school.

im a mother as of last tuesday! :giggle: and i work as a community program assistant in my city where i work with mentally challenged people who help us operate our non-profit shredding business.

i tried sign language a few yrs back and was really interested in it until i realized that no one in my family or in my life knew sign and that if i didn't use it, i'd lose it so i stoppedtaking classes.

the doctors say eventually i'll be completely deaf but for right now, that's something far down the road that i'll deal w/ when the time comes.:afro:

I had a friend who had a similar experience.

Her parents didn't figure she was deaf until she was 2 or 3 years old. Because of that, they don't know if she was born deaf or became deaf later on.

They always thought she was hearing because she always responded to sounds that happened around the house. For instance, if someone knocked on the door or the doorbell rang... she would run to the door. If the phone rang, she would run to the phone. What the parents later realized was that she was relying on what the parents were looking at. When someone rang the doorbell, the mom would look at the door. She would see her mom looking at the door and run in that direction. If the phone rang and her mom looked at the phone, she would see her mom looking at the phone and run towards the phone. Heh!
